Senior Billy Hague led the way for the Patriots with 18 points, six rebounds and six steals. Senior Mike Petersen contributed 13 points and 8 rebounds. But the key to success tonight for HCS was their outstanding defense. They prevented Steve Messner from getting any points, they kept Wes Watts down to only five points and slowed down Steve Scranton to only six points. The Patriots put on a display of their best defensive efforts this season. They caused 12 AVC turnovers. The Patriots had their best turnover to assist ratio this season with 14 turnovers and 14 assists. They also outrebounded the Warriors, getting 37 rebounds on the evening to the Warriors 26. And their first quarter effort of 24-2 (probably the best first quarter any HCS team has played in the last ten years) set the stage for the evening, letting AVC know this was not any Hesperia Christian team.
There were some flaws tonight. Again HCS shot a miserable 62% from the charity line. That's a percentage point less than their normal percentage. HCS' shooting percentage from the two foot mark was way off and with their size that should not be the case. The Patriots' two leading scorers, Zach Howard and Mike Maerzluft had off nights scoring eight and six points respectively. Both should have done better but fortunately Petersen and Hague picked up the slack.
So Hesperia Christian now stands atop the Agape League at 4-0 and overall at 13-6. They next meet cellar dwelling Victor Valley Christian at home next Tuesday night.
The Warriors are led by senior Wes Watts, an All-Agape League player. He can rebound well and consistently can get about 17 points for his team. He is supported by soph Steven Messner, who is their only three point shooter this season. He averages about 11 PPG but is capable of putting up 25 points in a game as he has done several times this season. Their big man inside is senior Steve Scranton although Watts is their top rebounder. Scranton does the blue collar scoring underneath. The Warriors like HCS are a terrible free throw shooting team, shooting 60% to HCS' 63%. Only Scranton shoots over 70% from the charity line. Like Joshua Springs they are very good rebounding on the defensive boards but not so good on their offensive rebounding. Their coach Rick Huff, is the senior coach in the Agape League and is indeed a combat multiplier for the team. Other than a game against Hillcrest Christian several years ago, Coach Huff is brilliant in the final minutes of a game.
Last year in the game at Apple Valley Rec, HCS won 57-54. HCS won the overall series last season 2-1. In the 2004 series HCS won 2-1 but was swept 0-3 in the season before. Coach Dobyns has never lost a league game to Apple Valley Christian as a head coach nor as a player.
But in this rivalry, stats never seem to mean anything. HCS is favorite by about four points as in many ways both teams are evenly matched. Defense, lack of turnovers and free throws will win this one for the Patriots.
