Hesperia Christian finished up the first half of the Agape League schedule by handily defeating Victor Valley Christian 78-53 to remain undefeated at 5-0. Zach Howard led the way with 16 points and shot 50% from the three point range. Mike Petersen added 15 points and did yeoman's work under the basket as he always does getting 9 rebounds. He got board support from Jonny barton who led the team with 10 rebounds. Jordan Vargas got a career high 10 points tonight. Billy Hague made 13 points and got 5 more steals to make him fourth in that category statewide. Mike Maerzluft had 12 points. So clearly the scoring was balanced and continues to make the Patriots a difficult team to defend as you cannot key in on one or two individuals. This will be a strength when playoffs roll around next month.
Of course into every ointment there must be several flies. HCS again shot a miserable 61%, two percentage points below their normal poor shooting. They must fix this in the next month to avoid teams from employing a "Hack a Patriot" defense. The Patriots's other major error was allowing the Royals to win both the second (16-14) and fourth quarter (12-11). This is simply inexcusable against a team like Victor Valley Christian irregardless of their outstanding first (21-10) and third quarter (32-15) scores. Credit must be given to the Hesperia Christian team for their outstanding performance in the turnover to assist ratio where for the first time they had a positive ratio of 10 to 21.
So HCS is now 14-6 (5-0) going into the second half of Agape League play and are presently ranked #2 in Socal for Div VAA.
In their last game with VVC, the Patriots had extremely well-balanced scoring from all of their players. Senior Mike Petersen led all scorers with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Zach Howard had 12 points and 5 steals. Junior Mike Maerzluft added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Senior point guard Billy Hague was perfect from the charity line at 4 for 4 and had 7 steals. Jonny Barton led the team in steals with 8.
The second team also supported the winning effort last time. Jordan Martinson came off the bench to put in 10 points, his career high. He also had 7 rebounds. Josh Ellis and Tyler O'Brien contributed to the win with 5 and 3 points respectively. Freshman Jordan Vargas demonstrated some outstanding defense getting 5 steals and 3 assists.
The Royals have new coaches and have one of the smallest teams that they have fielded in over four years. No player is over 5' 11". They are fast but because of their size only get one shot per time down court. The Royals have not beaten the Patriots in well over six years and hope to get the upset this evening. This will be a good evening for HCS to practice their inside game and perfect it. They also should get a minimum of 40 rebounds tonight. The first team's goal tonight is to have this game over by the half. To not do so would be a failure. They should pick up the defense and stop Roufail, Abraham and Etheridge from doing any scoring much as they did against Messner and Watts last Friday night. A positive turnover to assist ratio would be a nice goal to attain. This will also be a night to see if HCS can make free throws, no small task for them. HCS should be favored by about 15 points.
