Hesperia Christian continued to tune up for post season play with a resounding 77-31 defeat of Antelope Valley Christian in Hesperia. Hesperia Christian is now 6-0 in Agape League and 15-6 overall.
The Patriots were led by Billy Hague and Jonny Barton with 14 points a piece and Josh Ellis who got 12 points off of four consecutive 3 pointers. Mike Petersen banged the boards and got 11 rebounds. Barton got eight rebounds. The team overall had 40 rebounds. Seven players scored above their point averages. Kyhl Pearson scored his first point of the season. Josh Ellis had a career high night. The second team that had played so miserably in the last match came alive tonight. They scored 37 of HCS' 77 points. Defensively HCS stopped the Eagles star in his tracks as Elvis De Jesus only got 3 points as opposed to the twenty he scored in the last game versus the Patriots. Only Dory Douglas who did not play last time scored any points of significance with 13 points.
Turnover to assist ratio was again a positive for the second game in a row as HCS had only 9 turnovers to 17 assists. Free throw shooting was phenomenal for HCS as they shot an astounding 76%. There were basically no flaws in Hesperia Christian's game tonight. If HCS can play like this through the remainder of the season, they will go very far.
The Patriots were led in the last game by senior captain Mike Petersen who had 14 points, six rebounds and 4 assists. Junior Jordan Martinson provided support with eight points. Scoring, however, was well-balanced across the team with just about everyone contributing some points. Josh Ellis, Preston Lamarca, Jordan Martinson,Tyler O'Brien and Mike Petersen all scored above their scoring averages. Billy Hague had a phenomenal 9 steals making him the second best in steals in all of Southern California with 75 thefts on the year. Hague is now fifth in the state with 94 steals.
Hesperia Christian now needs to finetune their game in preparation for the post season. They have to dominate the boards against smaller teams like the Eagles. Anything less than 40 rebounds is bad. They have to continue to drop their turnover rate and increase their assist rate. Quality teams worry about team stats and not individual stats at this time of the season. I'm not sure the Patriots have matured to that level yet. They have to get the team free throw shooting percentage up above 70% not their percentage of 63%. Free throws will determine winners in the playoffs. Finally they have to learn how to stop stars on the other team. Tonight they need to keep DeJesus, the Eagle's star under 10 points. HCS' magic number is now 3.
