The Merry Devils
by
Edward Marston
Genre: mystery, historical fiction

Rating:***

Summary: Westfield's Men are putting on a new play calle The Merry Devils, but the performances are anything but merry. During the first performance, a third devil pops through the trap door, more devilish than the others, and, during the second performance, one of the devils is found dead. Somebody is definitely trying to sabotage Westfield's Men, but no one seems to know who.

As with The Queen's Head, this lovely little piece is filled with innuendo. In fact you can bet that all the books by this author will have a big "R" rating. I prefer the atmosphere and the characters to the actual mystery. I think that's true to all the historic novels I read. The actual plot is better than some of the others in the series, and Ralph Willoughby's madness is interesting to observe.
