Sources of Transcripts

As well as being able to view census and parish register fiche at the local Record Offices (Taunton in the case of Somerset) it is also possible to purchase some of these to view at your leisure. Here are some of the sources I have used.

1851 census This has been transcribed by Gordan Beavington for Somerset, Gloucestershire, Bristol etc.(see above) and is available to purchase on CD. See http://www.mycensuses.com

1881 Census Transcribed in its entirety by the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and available to purchase from their web site. See www.familysearch.org

1841/61/71/91 Census Some of these are available to purchase on fiche. Contact the Public Record Office at repro-ordering@pro.gov.uk for details of what is available and costs.

Census Class lists These show all the parishes and the census reference numbers (class numbers). Also available from repro-ordering@pro.gov.uk

Parish registers Many baptism, marriage and burial registers can be purchased on fiche. For Somerset, contact the record office on archives@somerset.gov.uk
