Galain's info on DVD Recording
Recording into iMovie
=================
Connect the DVCAM to the G4 using the firewire connection.
Connect any analogue source machines to the DVCAM and select the appropriate
input.
In iMovie you should receive a picture from the DVCAM. If not, restart
the computer. (If a good quality signal input in to the DV CAM, iMovie will
pick it up after a few seconds; if not insert a blank DV tape and press record
and pause)
Record the program into iMovie
After the program has been recorded, place all clips in order in the
timeline and trim the start and end of any unwanted black.
If the program is for iDVD, it must be less than 60 minutes. Export
the timeline and select export to iDVD. The program will be exported in to
a new single file.
Import this file into iDVD to create a simple DVD
NOTE: You must save the iMovie project or it will automatically delete all
the clips from the hard drive.
For Larger DVDs (with Menus) Created in DVD Studio
Pro
=================
For larger DVDs that will be converted into mpeg-2 through the
QuickTime Player, you dont need to export the whole program to new file
only the 9.28 clips that need editing need to be exported. This saves
disk space and a lot of time.
Any clips that need editing (usually only the first and last if there
wasn't a problem with the original footage) bring in to he timelines and edit
as necessary.
Then export the individual clips to the same directory as the original
file, except naming the new file differently e.g., Original clip is
called clip01 The new clip should be called clip01a
(Place the clip back into the clip window to edit the next clip.)
Converting Files from mpeg-2 in QuickTime
=================
Open the QuickTime Player and open the first file in the sequence (if
there is only one file then go to the exporting instructions)
Move the time indicator to the very end of the first file and drag
the second file from its folder in to the QuickTime window.
Drop the file in the window and it will be joined at the end of the
first clip. The time indicator should now be at the end of the second clip.
Repeat this as necessary until all the clips are included.
Go to File and Export.
Select the destination of the file and type in the file name.
Under Export, select Movie to mpeg2 and click
Options.
For the video with sound these settings should be selected PAL,
4:3, Save Audio, Field Dominance: Automatic.
The quality setting is 9.8 for the highest quality and this will allow
roughly one hour of video and audio to fit on a DVD disc. If you have a longer
program, adjust the quality setting. In the box below the slider it tells
you the Estimated File Size. This should be 4.5 Gig or less.
Because the variable bit-rate the actual size is usually is smaller
but to save doing
it again if it is not, use the estimated File Size Number.
Click Okay once all setting have been made
Click save to convert the file.
On the new G4, the file will take about 1.5 times its length to convert
and save a video file (denoted by the .m2v at the end of the video file name)
and an audio file (denoted by the .aif at the end of the audio file name),
which is necessary for creating a DVD.
Dont try to squeeze too much on to one disc. At half quality
(allowing almost 2 hours) you really start to see compression like a video
CD. 90 minutes is a good limit to work to.
Once the file has been converted, you are ready to create the DVD.
Creating Sill Menus for DVD (Photoshop knowledge required
RGB Color)
=================
Create menus at a pixel size of 768 wide x 576 high at 72dpi with transparent
contents.
Build your menu in Layers (being aware of the safe areas of a television
10% frame edge is action safe and 20% is title safe).
Create a background and name it.
Create your buttons and name them
Create text for the buttons
Create the different states for the buttons e.g., a selected state
and an activated state. Such as a yellow border around a button for a selected
state and a red border around the button for the activated state.
Email Me if you have
additions to these methods. Thanks!
