Hotline Client 1.2.3 Navigation Tips
Ease of use when browsing a server in 1.2.3 Clients
(A few of these have keyboard equivalents you can see in the menus for the
client...but those are different than these):
Option->Double-click to make the folder come up in the SAME window (this one really saves having a mess of windows all over when browsing a server!).
To go BACK (up a level) in the same window, it's Option Command->UP Arrow.
To jump to the top or bottom of a long window (including the news window), use Command->Home or End.
To page up and down as you would in a browser or text app, use Option or Command->Page Up or Page Down key. Very useful for navigating the news if you don't care to use the mouse and scrollbar.
You can also use the keyboard to select text to copy in the news. Click where you want to start (you won't see the cursor flashing there), and hold the shift key and use the arrow keys to select text in different ways. Right & Left Arrows select one letter at a time. Up and Down select entire lines at a time. Press and hold any of the arrows for very quick selection of larger areas. You can also Shift-Click to select an entire block of text, click where you want to start, and hold shift and click again where you want to end the selection. Some of you recognize these methods from various text applications you've used, I'm sure.
Command->Up Arrow will open the Files folder.
Control->Up or Down Arrow will alternate between open windows in the client.
Highlight a users name in the user list and drag to the desktop to make a clipping of that person's name.
Control-F12 will bring up the Secrets box, where
you can change custom icons and other secret commands (see other pages on
this site for some of those).
NOTE 1: In Mac OS 9.x you need to use Control-Option F12 or you will bring
up the F-keys dialog of the OS.
NOTE 2: On newer PowerBooks (year 2000 and above) use the fn key to access
the F12 command.
