Allen Dawes used to work at the Bronx Zoo as the chief maintenance engineer for the zoo’s aviary. From day one, Allen took a liking to the animals he cared for. He would let them out at night, feeling sorry that they were cooped up all the time. He soon learned that the animals did what he wanted.

On evening, his boss came to the zoo to find Dawes had loosed some of the rarer birds. His boss fired him on the spot. As his boss started to roughly cage the birds, Allen struck back in rage, killing the man. Dawes left the scene and disappeared.

Months later, a string of small crimes perpetrated, by what seems to be cats and dogs, afflicted the city. Only days ago, while modeling the new Kenneth Klane line of designer dresses for summer, supermodel Kacy Ross was abducted by a large flock of pigeons, who carried her away through the skylight, amidst cries of horror and outrage. The only link to the robberies and the kidnapping are scraps of paper left behind bearing the words, "The Beggar King."
