Background:
Ben was born and raised on a boat. His father was a deep sea salvager, based in Seattle. His mother left when he was very young. Ben never got to know her. The family income came from what Ben's father could find on the bottom of the ocean. Though his father excelled at his job, money was scarce. Eventually, Ben was forced to learn his father's trade, so he could contribute financially. Ben came to love diving and the ocean.
When Ben went to school, he discovered a gift for numbers. This earned him a scholarship to an elite private school on the East Coast. Ben didn't stop there. He went on to get his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University in Chicago. Eventually, Ben took a job as a professor, teaching mathematics and doing research at University of Washington in Seattle, where he grew up.
Now at age 25, Ben spends his weeks teaching college students calculus and his weekends helping his aging father run the ailing salvaging business. There has been some tension between father and son since Ben returned from the East. His father believes that Ben thinks that he's "too good" for working on a boat. Currently, Ben is trying to find a way to help his father without wounding his father's pride.
NOTES:
-
Ben gets his logical side from his training as a mathematician.
-
He gets his methodical side from preparing for underwater dives, where being unprepared can kill you.
-
He got his sense of adventure from his father, as well as his quick temper and dislike of spontaneity.
-
Ben's sense of humor developed naturally after watching hours of Comedy Central! :)
