SCPH 100x SERIES
Stealth Chip Installation Instructions
Before disassembling the PSX unit be sure to have a clean, well-lit work area with
storage containers for loose parts. You will require a 15 watt pencil tip soldering iron,
a phillips head screwdriver, solder and electrical tape to secure the MOD chip to the
PlayStation mainboard.
Disconnect PlayStation unit from power source as well as video hookups. Remove any
memory cards or compact discs that may remain in the system. Flip the unit over and remove
the (5) case screws. Store screws. Turn unit right side up, and remove the top half of the
case.
The CD assembly is to be removed next. Begin by locating the ribbon cable connecting
the lens assembly to the mainboard. Firmly grip the ribbon cable at the
large white base connector and begin to gently pull upward to free the
ribbon cable from the base connector (on some of the early model
playstations such as the SCPH 100x and SCPH 3000 series you may have
to lift the black socket a little bit in order to release the ribbon cable).
Close attention must be made
when handling this cable. It is extremely fragile and requires extreme care. Once the
ribbon is free, pull the remaining connecting cables from the boards. Again caution must
be taken. If the connectors are tight gently rock left and right until they are unplugged.
Always grip by the connecting base. NEVER PULL CONNECTORS BY THE WIRES.
Once all connectors are cleared, gently remove the lens assembly. To do this gently
grasp either side and lift it straight up, off of the mounting posts. Be careful not to
touch the exposed glass lens or drop the assembly. Set assembly aside.
Remove the (5) screws securing the controller port assembly and surrounding thin metal
shielding. Lift the thin metal shielding off and unplug the controller port assembly from
the mainboard and remove.

Once the laser assembly, controller port assembly and thin metal shielding are removed
a heavy metal plate remains covering the mainboard. Remove the (5) securing screws. Now
gently lift the steel plate from the system and set aside.

CAUTION: Before handling the circuit board touch a piece of grounded metal to remove
any static charge from your body. These components are static sensitive. Remove the (3)
screws securing the rear edge of the circuit board and gently lift it from the case. Set
the case aside.

To begin, flip the main board over (THE MOD CHIP IS INSTALLED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE
MAINBOARD). Using the provided picture
compare it to the board to
identify the area in which the chip is to be installed.
The board is now ready to be soldered. To start you should have a fine tip, low
temperature soldering iron. (15 watt is ideal) Using the solder provided quickly touch the
iron and the solder onto the pad. Hold only for a second. When the iron tip is removed you
should have a tiny ball of solder bonded to the pad on the board. All MOD chips come
pre-wired and soldered so tinning the wires is not necessary. Place the wire onto the
pre-soldered contact and touch it with the soldering iron. The solder should flow and the
wire will bond to the pad. To complete the wiring, attach the other remaining wires to the
indicated soldering pads. CAUTION: Due to the heat involved in soldering you must only
hold the tip on the work for enough time to get the solder to flow. If too much heat is
applied to the work it may damage the chip, lift the PCB trace or burn the insulation back
on the wire. If the insulation for the MOD Chip wires burns back you must trim and
re-solder. Too much insulation removed could result in the exposed copper touching other
traces on the board. This is hazardous to the PSX unit.

Once all of the wires are attached, visually inspect the board to ensure that no
exposed copper is touching any adjacent traces. You can now lay the MOD Chip on the
board in a clear area where it will not be damaged.
Once you are pleased with the work, follow the above steps in reverse order to
re-assemble the PlayStation.
Reconnect the unit to your power source and video outputs. Power up the Play Station.
The chip will take a few seconds to initialize when playing imports or backups. If the
unit is turned on and the white screen does not boot up within a few seconds shut the unit
off immediately. Disassemble the PSX and start from the beginning to try and find the
fault.
