INSTALLING A DREAMCAST MOD CHIP

WARNING

If you are not confident that you are capable of soldering then please find someone who is before installing. Incorrectly soldering a mod-chip may damage your Dreamcast!


TOOLS REQUIRED FOR MOD CHIP INSTALLATION:

Philips Head Screwdriver
Soldering Iron (15 Watts or less)
Solder (Low Melting Point)
Electrical Tape (optional)


DISASSEMBLY

Step 1
Open your Dreamcast and safely store the four cover screws.

Open the arrow marked screws. Then Lift off the entire lens unit and base together. Then remove the power supply, remember there is a small clip that must be unclipped.

Step 3
Open the arrow marked screws. Then lift the steel plate by the clear/white plastic knob at the center left of the plate.  Make sure you don't lift the PC board up with the plate.

Step 4
Locate where your bios chip is installed. Look at the numbering on the the bios chip. If the bios chip says "21931" or "21933" then it's the new bios. If your bios says "21068" then it's the old bios.

All Dreamcasts (USA, EURO, JAP) have the new bios EXCEPT the early version JAP models. These early version JAP models were manufactured up till December of 1999.

You can determine if your Dreamcast is using the OLD or NEW bios without opening the system. With the lid open if you see 2 black felt pads then it's the new bios. If you don't see 2 black felt pads when looking into the system then it's the old bios. The DreamChip works with all bios versions.

Select the wire number and bios chip version of your Dreamcast below to continue.
