This is the Eircom League Commissioner's response to the recent Press Release by Independent Saints, which expressed the frustration of our members with the last minute cancellation of the game against Bohemians.
To: Independent Saints
I fully agree with the sentiments you express about the inconvenience for
fans caused by late arrangements and/or postponements of matches. This
season, because the last day on 31st March is much earlier than usual left a
much smaller timespan than previous years between the normal end of bad
weather (end February) and the end of March. For St Pats in particular there
were special problems caused by
(i) the fact that Richmond Park was the
pitch worst affected by bad weather on the east coast causing the
postponment of the game against Derry twice and
(ii) the freak coincidence
that four of Pats last five matches were against the clubs which qualified
for the FAI Cup semi-finals.
This meant that while it would have suited
everyone for Pats to play last weekend there was no-one to play against. My
efforts to get Bohs to play Pats last Tuesday was based on the need to get
games played in the fairest circumstances for everyone.
With the move to partial summer football next season, and full summer the
following one, I hope that we are almost at the end of weather affecting
matches.
I apologise to the Pats fans, and those of other clubs, who have been
inconvenienced by all the fixture changes of recent weeks.
Best regards
Roy Dooney
