Saint Patrick's Athletic 3 - 2 Cork City
Saint Pats are now three points off the top of the league table, after today's astonishing win over a tough tackling Cork City.
City took the lead after only 8 minutes when C P O'Brien managed to get the ball across the line from a corner. The Saints responded by increasing the pressure on the Cork goal and these efforts finally bore fruit when Robbie Griffin scored after he headed in a Mbabazi corner. Only moments earlier we were denied a penalty by referee Dick O'Hanlon, when Ger Mc Carthy was pushed over in the box by Declan Daly.
Then in the second half Cork started to pass the ball around nicely and seemed the more likely to score, this proved to be the case when Conor O'Grady scored a cracker from outside the area on 52 minutes. At this stage Cork looked certainties to return home to Leeside with all three points in the bag, but a resilient Saints side had other ideas and managed to get on level terms when Michael Holt came off the bench to score. Then the Saints clinched an unlikely winner in a barnstorming finish when Ger McCarthy struck from inside the area after Willie Burke's shot had been deflected into his path. A great win for the club but sadly
in front of a very poor Saints crowd. From the attendances at this game and in previous Sunday games against Mons and Shamrock it is obvious to all that Friday night is football night at the Stadium of Light. Sunday's just don't seem to work for us.
