Caring for your Bunny
This page is all about how to care for your bunny. Like any other pet, a rabbit is very dependant on you and can be very demanding. Although caring for your bunny can be very rewarding. Here are just a few pointers to head you off in the right direction.
Home Comforts
- A rabbit needs a warm dry comfortable floor surface which consists of a lining material and bedding. REcommended bedding suggests a 5cm layer of peat, cat litter, natural wood fibre chippings or soft white shavings (not pine). On top if this a layer of hay or shredded paper so the bunny can lie down comfortably. Do not use straw as it has sharp edges and it can cause damage.
- Your bunny needs something hard 2 chew on like a wood block. This will exercise his teeth and help them maintain the correct length.
- Rabbits are very house proud animals and it is important that you clean them out regularly - wet litter and droppings need to be removed daily and the floor about once a week. They only use one area as a toilet so this makes things easier, a lined litter tray can also be used to keep the rest of the area dry and clean.
Easy Lifting
- To pick up your rabbit, you have to be firm but gentle, they must never be picked up by the ears. In order to lift, place your one hand on the scruss and your other hand around the rump. Lift your rabbit towards you and against your body. When placing her back down, lower its hind feet first to prevent it kicking.
