Well, for starters, Tintin is all by Hergé. He comes up with the story, draws it, and writes it. His really name is Georges Remi -- Hergé is a pen name he made up.
Hergé was born in 1907, and died in 1983. He lived in Brussels, Belgium. Tintin books were originally written in French, because that's the language Hergé spoke. Reading Tintin books, there is no way of telling that it was in French and was translated.
Hergé always loved to draw. He had drawn other comics before making Tintin. His first Tintin book, Tintin in the land of the Soviets, came out in 1929. Next came Tintin in the Congo. Next was Tintin in America, and you know the rest.
Hergé did some traveling, and he made Tintin the way he would like to be. Well, he isn’t the only one who wants to be like Tintin, Tintin fans want to be like him, in some way. Don’t we all? Well, as you can see, Tintin was a big hit. It started of in black and white, but then Hergé changed them into color, and made the rest in color too. [Now the only Tintin book still in black and white is Tintin in the land of the Soviets.] Later Hergé got married, and his wife did a little of the drawings in Tintin too.
Tintin books had became so famous when Hergé had met Casterman, who published them all.
You may not have noticed, but Hergé has drawn himself in some Tintin books. You can spot him in some crowd scenes. To the left is a drawing by Hergé, of himself. That's how he looks as a cartoon!
One question about Hergé’s name is always wondered. How do you pronounce it? The way it’s written suggests that it’s HER-jh. Well, it’s not. If you’ve gotten used to saying this way, brace yourself. It’s actually pronounced Air-zhay. Sounds very French.
Since Tintin is from Belgium, Tintin is especially famous there. There are many Tintin related things there. There’s a Tintin museum, Marlinspike; a replica of Marlinspike Hall, Tintin stamps, and it’s a lot easier to find Tintin products there, like t-shirts and post cards. So if you’re a Tintin fan, Belgium is the place to be.
Hergé died in a hospital. His death was in the newspaper, saying that the maker of Tintin had died. All of Brussels now knew. Hergé was quite famous by then. And the sad thing was that he died before his latest Tintin book--which was only in sketches--was complete. Hergé had made it clear that he didn’t want anyone else to make Tintin books after he was dead, so it took his wife a while to decide whether or not to publish his unfinished Tintin book. She decided to do so. It’s called Tintin in Alfa-art and is in it’s unfinished form, with the end unknown, or at least that's what I hear. Tintin’s last words written won’t ever be known....
