Three female Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) staffers were left traumatised last evening after bandits robbed them while they were working at the Enterprise Primary School, East Coast Demerara.
Kaieteur News understands that the women had just completed their duties for the
day and were awaiting transportation around 19:45 hrs when two men, who were
armed with a handgun and a knife, entered the premises.
The robbers then ordered the victims to lie on the floor and proceeded to
relieve them of their money, jewellery and mobile phones. They then escaped.
A source said that police responded promptly but by then the bandits had left
the scene. It is believed that the suspects are from the area.
According to some reports, the men had visited the school on Thursday to collect
their national identity cards.
GECOM began distributing national identification cards this week for persons
registered during the 2008 house-to-house registration exercise.
Some 272 temporary distribution centres have been established countrywide.
