HISTORY OF KUCHING CITY
At the past Kuching was known as ‘Sarawak’ which is control by the Sultan of Brunei. Sarawak was peaceful until 1830, when the trouble arose from the Brunei Sultanate and causing a huge demonstration against the Brunei Empire. That time many of the citizens were forced to pay a high tax and many local were sacked without any reason. These are the caused for the huge scale demonstration against the Brunei Empire.
At this time, a rich English adventurer known as James Brooke appeared and volunteered to stop the demonstration or revolt. James Brooke was successful in stopping the revolt. As a token of gratitude Sultan Brunei appoint James Brooke as a Governor for Sarawak. Soon after, James Brooke requested British Navy assistance to protect his position and chased out all Sultan Brunei's officers from Sarawak. Than, Sultan Brunei try to counter back and forcefully taking back Sarawak from James Brooke but the effort what a waste of time. Sultan Brunei doesn’t just fail to get back Sarawak but been force to sign an agreement with James Brooke. This agreement makes the Sultan Brunei to hand over Sarawak to James Brooke and this make James Brooke as the first English Rajah on Sarawak on 24 November 1841.This mark the beginning of the Kuching.
Sarawak is under control by the Brooke family until 1942. World War 2 has banged the world and Sarawak was fully taken by the Japanese Army, meanwhile the third Rajah (Charles Vyner Brooke) fled to Australia. Japan was surrender in the year 1945, where Nagasaki and Hiroshima was bomb by the US Army. With that Sarawak is under Australian Administration until the third Rajah decide to hand it over to British Government. Sarawak has gain an independent by joining with Sabah and Malaya to form a nation known as Malaysia.
