The Long Walk (Donovan)

Donovan walked beside Amara, as the two approached Malachi's chambers. The thoughts in his head swirled together to create an abstract tapestry of both soft beauty and utter confusion. He was feeling emotions he thought long dead, he was longing more than for death and destruction. He was becoming weaker he thought, but for the first time in his many years, he was appoaching something of a contentment. What was it about this young girl? He had embraced others before, and not cared about them in the slightest. In fact, he had disposed of most of them. He could get any woman he wanted. Any in the world. Yet he had never loved one. Those women though..they were not with him by choice. He knew that. They just could not resist him.

Amara, though, had a choice. She had picked him over Malachi. He freed her, half expecting her to run to Mafiosi and expose them. Yet she stayed with him. Why? And why did he care for her in return? Because she did make the free choice to be his? Is this what 'love' was then? An unexplainable circle that somehow linked two beings? If that was so, then that is why he fell for it, after years of convincing himself he would not. It was unescapable.

But mentally, he did not think it wise. He could have jeopardized everything by giving her back her complete will. But he had also seen how she was like him in so many ways, that he knew she would not betray him, because in a way, it would be betraying herself. He honestly did care deeply for Malachi too, more so than a brother for a brother. He knew Malachi would be disappointed in him for what he did, and he did not want to hurt his 'brother', but he knew it was the right thing to do.

The right thing..heh. He had never thought of doing that before. But he had never met anyone who had made him ponder anything other than living the life of a vampire. And what of Mafiosi? Actually showing compassion to him? Calling him son and childer? What..no..must not think like that. Mafiosi was doing so for 'Fool', not for Donovan. Mafiosi did not care for him. But what will Amara think now that she is free? Would she still care for Mafiosi, or that boy Strider? Or would she continue to love him, as he felt he did her? He would just have to believe in her, and in himself.

The two reached the door to Malachi's room, and Donovan opened it for Amara.

"Go ahead, m'lady. I will follow you."
