Oh, really? I was wondering what it would be like if everyone called me by a nickname instead of my real name. If that happened, I think I would want mine to be "Prince of Weasels", because then I could go up and bite people and they would turn around and go, "What the-?" And then they would recognize me, and go, "Oh, it's you, the Prince of Weasels."

And then BM's original account's quote was "The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it. -George Bernard Shaw". Food for thought right there.

Yours ain't bad neither. My favorite one, off the top of my head, was outbreakorn's; "I don't think video games influence kids. Take Pac-Man for instance. If that influenced us, then we all would be running around, eating magic little pills in the dark while listening to repetitive electric music."

Ah, but there have been a lot of interesting posts over the years as well! Almost anything the old board hunters posted was quoteable, especially Scum, NinjaMaster, Medea and Interceptor.Case in point:

"I used to have a He-Man plastic cup. I didn't buy it, it was free from some fast food place. I hated that cup, it tried to kill me..." - Scum

"So I says to SBP, I says, "That Scum sure likes apples!"
And the whole room cracked up laughing. That's when I knew I was meant to be a Dentist." - NinjaMaster

"It doesn't matter how many boards you've seen if you don't read the posts. It would be more impressive if someone has read every single post on gamefaqs, but that's probably impossible and there wouldn't be any way to tell.
I like seeing what kind of different people post on these boards. Some of them are boring RPG crap, and some of them are just random silliness. Every once in a while you'll come across something really interesting or funny and that makes it all worth it!" - Medea

"I'm done operating. I have good news and bad news. The good news is there is enough apples for all. The bad news is that's just enough for Scum." - Interceptor

Oh, even better than single quotes are the conversations they had. Like the ever versatile sign-tapping joke:

Scum: *steals said apples*

NinjaMaster: *taps the "No Stealing" sign*

Scum: Nice try. *taps on the No Tapping Sign*

NinjaMaster: That's some mighty fine tapping.

Scum: Thank you, I practiced a lot.

Or some classic Starmy Vs. Scum action:

Scum: Hey, is that a flower?

Starman Deluxe: Yep. *stomps on flower*

Scum: Hey, that's my future lunch you're stomping! Quit it!

Starman Deluxe: Oh, so it is. . . *stomps harder*

Scum: Fine, I'll just have to eat your foot then. Would you help me out and cut it off for me? Thanks in advance.

Starman Deluxe: I dunno. . . sounds painful. Why don't you just eat this dead squirrel?

Scum: Nah, I'm trying to cut back on dead squirrel. Come on, off with it. You've got to toughen up or you'll never make captain of the girl's gymnastics team.

Starman Deluxe: Aw, but I look so good in a leotard. Oh, very well. But I'm squeamish, so could you cut it off?

Scum: But that's the whole point. You've got to get over your fear of losing limbs and cut it off yourself if you're ever going to be able to fulfill your dreams. But I'll pour the salt into your wound afterwards, if you'd like.

I've been a secret board hunter since late 2002, and have been amidst board hunters since 2001, so I guess you might say I'm kind of an expert on board hunting. Not that I'm the best hunter, nor even one of. There are plenty of better people to ask, but I doubt any would give you as long-winded as a reply as me. It's a very esoteric concept, and I can probably at least explain it better than most. I've been asked for pointers on board hunting more than once, so I've considered writing a guide of sorts to my style of hunting. Now I have an excuse to. Okay then..

Secret board hunting's not quite as simple as its premise. If you ask secret boarders, the majority will probably tell you board hunters simply go around posting inane messages all over the place as fast as they can or that they're just some people that go around looking for secret boards. Neither is entirely correct, especially the former. There are those that claim to be secret board hunters that simply go through secret boards posting smilies and other uninspired crap in every single post to, essentially, just raise their post count. They never read any of the interesting topics they find, nor do they ever intend to revisit any boards they come across. I don't think there is anything further from being a board hunter than that. Some of these alleged hunters have at least had the decency to acknowledge they're simply tarnishing the name of secret board hunters and have dubbed themselves "secret board wanderers". However, the terminology I prefer to use for such people is "Experts On Pissing Off Xim". Well, maybe they're not that bad, but it just makes me frustrated sometimes, trying to think of something witty and topical in every single one of my posts while following someone that posts "*walks past*" everywhere. Doesn't leave much room for inspiration, I tell you what.

To me, there are four key points to board hunting; finding interesting boards and people, saving good topics from the purge, making somebody smile when they read my posts, and sharing laughs with fellow hunters. In response to your particular questions, following the alphabet is basically what most hunters do, no worries. There are other styles too; hunting by board number or hunting by category (Action, RPG etc) are other popular methods, but the one I use is called the Backwards Journey. You follow the alphabet, but backwards, starting on WonderSwan Color with Yakusoku no Chi: Riviera and moving from the bottom to top of letters and up the systems to end on 20th Century Video Almanac for 3DO.

There are hundreds, no, thousands of great topics and secret boarders out there. Will you become one of the elite defenders of these secret boards? Will you become a secret board hunter? Only time will tell.

I can think of a few good pointers. First off, keep a list of cool boards you find in notepad or something. Back when I finished the Backwards Journey during the summer of 2003, I had two lists. One that was kind of like another Favorites list, that listed the best secret boards I'd found (determined by people and topics, not post count) and another "Master list". The Master list contained information about tons of secret boards. The notes on each were quite varied, sometimes citing just one person I knew of had a topic there, to simply stating it was a faction, to maybe several sentences that explained the backstory of the board, so I'd know what was once there in case I ever went back and everything had purged. Just to give you an idea of the scale of this Master list, it has nearly 1600 boards listed. That's just my thing though. It's a good way to keep tabs on people I've met so I can contact them if I need or want to. Most hunters don't go to that extreme. But I suggest you at least make a Favorites list (my Favorites list has about 150 boards listed. That may seem like a lot, but you have to consider the entire Backwards Journey goes through 5000+ secret boards).
From: Xim | Posted: 11/5/2004 10:06:20 PM | Message Detail
Also, make every post count. Don't fall into the habit of posting just emoticons everywhere or anything else uninspired like such. If you remember anything from all of what I've said here, remember that your post count means nothing if each post contains about 5 characters. Let me make that perfectly clear. How fast you hunt and your post count mean nothing at all to true hunters. Too many people do that, and it ruins it for other board hunters. I'm not trying to make it sound like board hunting is a chore or anything, far from it. I do it for fun just like everybody else, but what you've gotta keep in mind is that you're not the only one that board hunts. Take the time to consider that people will respond after you do; leave them some room to make a good post. If you post something like just "^_^" in a post, chances are the next person will post another emoticon, maybe "v_v" then the next post will be "<_<" and then ">_>" and so on. It may seem amusing at first, but after seeing that tired old pattern so many times, it starts to lose its allure, to put things lightly. Not only that, but it brings down the quality of topics. Also, this isn't really that important, but if you ever use emoticions in your posts, never, NEVER simply post "@_@". I don't what it is about that smiley, but it really, really annoys me, more than any other. So, make spirited, clever posts all the time, and you'll be one of the best hunters ever in my book, it doesn't matter if you never finish hunting through one system. A good reply will make someone laugh. To quote NinjaMaster: "It combines impeccable timing, hilarious slapstick, immense wit, and the power of puns all into one joke."

I'm ashamed to admit it now, but, back then, when I first attempted to become a board hunter, I was doing it for glory, not for fun. I wanted secret boarders to look up to me, just like I looked up to the old board hunters. That's just wrong. Never go board hunting just for the post count or for fame. Staying true to this ideal is the honorable way, the hunter's way. I've opened my heart and soul as a hunter to you in these posts. Heed my words or not, it's up to you.

That's basically all the advice I can think of right now. If I think of anything else, I'll post it, if you'd like. Real board hunters are a dying breed. ZZtw0's board is proof of that. To just go there and look up secret boards in a list doesn't make you a board hunter. It also kind of makes me mad that he classifies the top 50 secret boards by post count. It's not that I dislike the guy, just what he's doing. He and I go way back in fact. Mention the name Kelt Jade to him sometime, I'd love to hear the kind of reaction he'd have to know that the foolish young co-leader of the faction directly opposing his old Z Empire now calls himself Xim.

Sad thing is, my Master list, I had planned to post it publicly once I finished the Backwards Journey. That would've made me no better than ZZtw0. But somewhere on Commodore 64, I realized that it's the hunt itself that makes board hunting so fun, not the spoils of the hunt. That's why.. I'd rather not tell you of any cool boards I know of or frequent. Come find us. You're a board hunter too, right? :)

Well, I just read it all.
It's nice to know that some of you can do more than just make funny jokes.
Your "speech" really meant something for me.
I appreciate it that you really put some effort in your answers, even more because you don't really know me.
Thanks.

It's true, sometimes I post O_o, but usually I'm trying to make a funny reply. Especially now I've read your story. I think I need some more practice ;)

A high post count doesn't mean that much to me. I think it's more important to be known and loved, instead of known and ignored.
Plus, when you hunt a lot, you 'll get a high post count in time.

And I was thinking about making a list, 60 boards in your favorites isn't nearly enough. I think I'll just make one list, or create alt. account to keep track of board
(by adding boards to favorites).

I do have some questions though, if you don't mind...

1) how many active messages do you have? Just to get an idea.
2) have you seen me before this topic?
3) won't you be sad when this topic gets marked?
4) do you check back on every post you make?
5) I guess I don't have to ask you how you feel about Luster Soldier...

Thanks for your time and effort, I'll remember this...
And yes, I will find you...

Hey, don't mention it. It's always nice to see some new blood step up. Just because I didn't know you know doesn't mean we probably might not have met later. Some of my favorite users on GameFAQs are simply random people I've met while hunting. For example, this guy dwimmerlaik was just some guy I met on the journey, and I simply noted he was posting some ascii on an insignificant board. Two months later, he's one of my good friends and fellow hunters. And don't worry about it if some of your posts are just emoticons or the like. I was like that too when I first started, most of us were.

As for your questions..
1) Well, I've been slacking off a bit lately, or not enough. I only have 2657 posts. But during the Journey, I capped off at about 7000 posts, and probably more than that afterwards, when I started revisiting the boards I'd noted. I never really pay too much attention. I'm kind of an inactive board hunter now. Not really retired, just on extended hiatus. I'm holding out for summer, when I'll attempt the Journey again.

2) Yes and no. I've seen you here and there, on several of my Secret Xim topics no less, but I didn't know you were a hunter, I thought you were just somebody that happened to stumble onto one of my secret boards. It's like what happened with dwimmy.

3) Naw, it's only a topic. Besides, when I like a topic a lot, I'll save it to my computer occasionally. That way, if it purges unexpectedly, I can put it up on the site I've made specifically for that reason. I call it GameFATs: Game Frequently Archived Topics". It took me like 10 seconds to think that jewel up. The best part is how there's totally no copyright infringement in there, I tell you what. If you could do the same, I'd gladly host any topics you like on my site, just send 'em via email. Just make sure they're purged. No point in archiving topics that still exist!

4) Well, like I said, I once had nearly 7000 posts, so, no. But yeah, after awhile of hunting, I'll skim through my posted messages to see if anyone's replied to any boards I'd written down in my Master list, and sometimes just any boards at all. If I didn't do that, I might not have ever met another one of my good friends, DocProc.

5) He's the "message deleter/single letter post" guy, right? Yeah, I think we know where this one's gonna go..

I went to the site in your quote...

It's hilarious!

I loce that comic, I've read about a year worth of comics, and I bookmarked it. A really funny comic.

Do you happen to know why this Luster Soldier deletes a message, then posts just a letter? Well, it seems he's lazy and only posts a letter instead of a coherent, intellegint post, but why delete a post?

Oh, I would be honored if you dropped by my humble board. The link is my sig.
Or do hunters not ask this, but wait till they're found?

Yeah, Bob And George is awesome. Not only that, but it's the granddaddy of all sprite comics, you know. Very first one. As for Luster, I once saw him bragging about having a huge post count (around 10000), so I think that's why he does it. Then NickBush24 (I think) came in and posted that he actually had nearly twice that. It was pretty funny.

As long as we're on the topic of quotes, I'll post one of secretboardhunter's older ones: "Just because I haven't posted doesn't mean I haven't found you. It's called lurking. Get used to it." Yeah, he was a hit at parties. Anyway, I looked over your board when I noticed your sig earlier. I was intimidated by all the foreign language. What is that, Dutch? I'll have you know, I once took a semester of German during my freshman year. It was really a full year course, but I was kicked out midway because apparently covering the entire classroom with mayonnaise does not constitute extra credit points. But I'm pretty confident in my fluency. Ask me anything.

Yeah, it's Dutch. I'm Dutch, obviously.
Some of the topics are in English, though.

As for the ask-you-anything, can you tell me something about the banning of some of the boardhunters?
I've seen littleman1324(?) and Black Mist, and a few I can't remember all banned.
Some of those were pretty popular, I noticed.
Maybe you can shed some light on it.

And I decided I'm gonna use that list. Just one.
Gonna be big one, though.

What is your obsession with mayonnaise? Sure, it tastes good, but to mention it in every topic? Some kind of running gag I presume.

Last remark of the day, I started to write my first FAQ. I'm very proud, so I tell it to everyone I know (or see).

Also, as the very, very last remark of the day, the reason I sometimes post a simple thing like O_o or runs through topic naked is I'm kinda worried about my spelling sometimes. I'm don't speak English native, so sometimes that holds me back.

And now for the last remark of this day, I really like this topic.
It has helped me understand myself when it comes to boardhunting. I feel like I'm destined to become a great hunter, known and loved on boards everywhere.
Of course I'll be giving away some money everywhere, but you get the idea... ;)

Lots of great hunters have been banned, sadly. Let's see.. littleman was actually a victim of Black Mist's ban. Previously, littleman decided to leave GameFAQs. He gave his account and all his alts to Black Mist. Later, Misty decided to post the passwords to littleman and all of his alts on Life, the Universe, and Everything. It was a real shock, I never would have thought he would have done something like that. littleman hasn't come back since, and BM returned with the account "Smudge" but doesn't log in much. I've asked him why he did it, and he told me he was just feeling bad over a girl. I promised not to give any details, though.

Other noteable ones off the top of my head are duckduckduck (Over 20 banned accounts, reavealed mod-only info, hacked into GalFord (a mod's) account) and FBI Porker ("excessive TOS violations"). It's not like most of these guys are that bad, in fact, duckduckduck is one of the funniest damn users on GameFAQs.

But I suppose the most famous of all banned board hunters is Scum. Scum wasn't really even one person, he was a ton of users (board hunters mostly) using the same account. But even though so many people used it, it came off as seeming like a real person (that's why I say "he"). One of his defining factors was his obsession with apples and how he managed to work apples into nearly every conversation without it seeming forced. He was banned along with outbreakorn, another one of the older hunters that had access to the account. obo slipped up (actually, he did it on purpose) and gave the password to LOL ANIME FANBOYS, one of the KOS Krew (group of users that have committed so many severe TOS violations, they are instantly banned, or Killed On Sight, when identified). LAF proceeded to get Scum instantly banned. Scum probably would have been unbanned, but ColdFusion, the moderator that created Scum, decided it was time to put the account to rest (since Scum had been suspended after being hacked several times before). When it was discovered outbreakorn was the source of the leak, he was banned as well. In my opinion, Scum is the best representation of a real board hunter. outbreakorn wasn't bad, pretty damn good in fact, but you could tell he was always jealous of Scum's fame.

Yeah, the thing with me and mayonnaise is kind of like Scum and apples. I didn't rip him off though, it just kind of worked out like that. It started off when someone gave everyone nicknames in this one topic when I was hunting through Commodore 64. There was a list of names to choose from, and I chose something to do with mayonnaise. Later, I metioned mayonnaise in another topic and got a lot of humorous replies. From then on, I decided mayonnaise would be my trademark. I kind of wish I hadn't, because now a lot of other people are pretending to be obsessed with random foods, like pickles. Whether I had anything to do with this, I have no idea, but when I read something like that and think it's lame, I wonder if some of the older board hunters think that about me. I tried to stop liking mayonnaise at one point. I even joined Mayonnaise Anonymous. Problem is, I kept going to the wrong meetings and ended up eating more mayonnaise. It's a vicious cycle, or a tricycle.

What's the FAQ about? I've been coming here since like 1997, and I have never once contributed anything! Maybe I could somehow compile the posts here into a secret board hunting FAQ and submit it..

You seem pretty good with English to me, if you can understand my sleep-deprived rants. Don't worry about the details so much. Even if you don't feel confident with English, keep in mind your posts are much more coherent than lots of GameFAQs users that speak English as their first language, especially those with their 1337 7yp1ng ski11z. Go for it! Become a fine hunter, Kaas. It's great to see some people haven't given up on that old board hunting spirit!

My FAQ is about Legend of Zelda;Link's Awakening.
One of the best Zeldas ever IMO. I'm writing a spoilerfree walkthrough, because the story is that good.
I'm gonna write some more after my dinner.

I also started that list today. I called it the Master List, to honor my "mentor". ;)
It gets very big, very fast. But it's very usefull.

I read the story about Scum on a Wonderswan board. You probably saw me post there, too. It's a good story.
Something to remember...

About my English, I'm very well aware it doesn't suck. But sometimes, I think of a funny reply, but notice I don't know a word in English. That's what I mean.
It's not that big a deal, but sometimes I'm a bit ticked of about it...

It's great to see some people haven't given up on that old board hunting spirit!
You damn right! Now bake me a pie!

That was the very first Game Boy game I've ever played. Yeah, the only Zelda games I like more are the original and maybe Ocarina Of Time. I don't remember if I ever beat it though. Maybe your FAQ can help! Yeah, I noticed you saw that Scum topic, but wasn't sure if you remembered. I've posted several variations of the story, and that one doesn't give much info on how Scum actually was banned, so just to give you an idea that lots of people can be banned even if it's not their fault. I've been banned 3 or 4 times myself, and since then, I've gotten maybe three moderated messages the entire time I've had this account.

And I baked you a pie, but I got hungry on the way over. Actually, by "on the way over" I mean "before I even left the house". And also, it was not so much a pie, but more of a clever little plot to trick you into making ME a pie. And there was less baking going on and more plotting my revenge. In conclusion, Libya is a land of varied culture.
