They have one at my local KMART. I manage to grab something so many times and it gets stuck in the crane. The prizes are too big. Maybe it's good that Kmart's closing. --- I'm trying to think of something cool to put here, until then, read this. (Go back to I'm trying) |

Yeah, don't you just hate it when the plushies are too big to fit in the little slot for it to come out of? I hate that. I can never win at those crane games. I used to try and try when I was little but then my mom would shove me away and tell me that you could never win on those things. --- Quitting is a habit. |

dude, i used to win like every time i played a crane game when i was little, sometimes i used to win more than one prize on one play (the crane would pick up more than one thing by the strings), now it seems like you can never win anything from them, i had a whole big garbage bag of toys just from crane games when i was little |

The best place to play this game is in restaurants where many ppl will see you.
1. If you actually get sumtin you everybody will more or less smile at your exceptional feat. 2. If you don't the manager will usually open the blasted thing and give you the stupid humped toy. hmmm, just plug it in, turn it on and play, it will probably still give out free candy, but only do this if its in a location where no one will see you do it! (if someone catches you just be like, i wanted to see what was wrong with it, i love this game!) |

Everyones good at the crane in my family except me. At a local Pizza joint I played it once and got lucky and won a plushie football helmet (strange). But mostly i just end up losing badly but those play to you win candy machines i'm sorta good at. HISTORY OF COIN OPERATED DIGGER GAMES IN AMERICA
The first digger was built in 1896 from a child’s toy and was intended to be a 1-cent candy vendor. It was a totally mechanical, hand-cranked machine.
It was named ‘ The Erie Digger’ in the early 1900’s to capitalize on the excitement created by the digging of the Erie Canal.
By the middle 1920’s it was in full production and offered 1-cent or 5-cent coin acceptors. It was encased in a fine solid oak cabinet with glass windows on three sides and continued to be all mechanical, using no electricity; not even an electric light.
During the 1920’s and 1930’s many other manufacturers produced their own version of a crane or digger game, and most of these were electrically operated, and had virtually no element of skill. Some of the most popular were those manufactured by Exhibit Supply Co. and International Mutoscope Co. But there were many other manufacturers.
With the proliferation of Slot Machines the Digger machines also became gambling devices. Clever operators learned to offer Silver Dollars, paper currency, and little bundles of coins wrapped in cellophane as the reward for lucky play.
During the 1920’s, through the 1930’s and beyond, these games were very profitable for their operators, usually operating for 5 cents per play. They were found in every arcade at amusement parks, boardwalks, and city parks. They could be seen in Drug Stores, Casinos, and in great numbers at State, County, and World’s Fairs, and with traveling carnivals.
After World War II diggers used large quantities of Japanese novelty items in the prize field to continue to cover up for the coin and currency which was still used as the real lure to play. The innocent looking, child’s toy crane was still actually a gambling device.
By the end of the 1940’s most diggers were working for 10 ¢ per play and a number of large traveling operators owned many machines operating at multiple locations in units of 10 or 12 games each. Bob Parker, Lee Moss, and Tommy Wells were well known for conducting this style of operation.
The operation of diggers changed forever in 1951 with the implementation of the Johnson Interstate Transportation Act. This law made it a Federal offence to transport gambling devices across state lines and all diggers were automatically placed in this category. Overnight the business of operating diggers ended.
Lee Moss, of Hot Springs, Arkansas who purchased the Erie Manufacturing Corp. in 1946 had been operating over 40 traveling units of 12 diggers each and was now out of business. He immediately brought all of his equipment into home base. The FBI quickly raided operators who did not cease their operations and their machines were seized and destroyed. Lee Moss lead a small group of former digger operators in a lobbying campaign which went on for 2 years but was finally successful in changing the classification of certain types of digger games from "Gambling Devices" to "Amusement Devices". Diggers could operate again, but only under specific guidelines. All electrically operated types were not allowed past 1951.
Starting in 1953 diggers began their life as carnival games exclusively, and only the mechanical (Erie type) were allowed under Federal laws. Gone were the coin slots. The player must now pay over the counter top and the operator activated the machine. No money could be offered as prizes, and no prize could have a value of over $1. The charge to play could not exceed 10c and they were only legal to operate at agricultural fairs and celebrations.
From 1953 through the late 1970’s the business of operating diggers was lead by a few shrewd carnival gypsy businessmen who made it into a legitimate enterprise. They had great success by giving out high percentages of merchandise, and by finding many new ways to make the diggers even more fun to play.

CONTINUED
With the relaxation of Federal laws, mechanical coin slots began to reappear on digger games in 1974, and shortly thereafter the cost to play was raised to 25c. A twenty-year moratorium on coin activated diggers was over. But, by the early 1980’s a new type of crane game invaded the U.S. from Europe and virtually ended the old-time digger game business.
Large crane games, controlled by solid state circuit boards, and able to pick up plushtoys swept the country. They could be seen in every truck stop and Wal-Mart vestibule from coast-to-coast. Many operators who put these games in operation did not understand the value of making sure that there were a lot of winners, and the public rebelled when they visited carnivals and fairs. Once again, people believed that no one could win when playing a digger.
By the mid 1980’s the old time digger business was a thing of the past, but the better plush crane operators learned to dispense a high percentage of merchandise and have now turned their crane operations into very successful profit centers thriving on repeat business and die-hard crane players. There are currently many modern operators with routes of several hundred crane machines, and there are two publicly held corporations operating 8,000 to 10,000 crane games each.
It’s the year 2000 and there are still "diggers", but they have come a long way. --- "I rule" - Neozombie |

anyone else have any crane game stories? i have one.
well, its not really a story, just about a guy who is obsessed about them.
usually, he puts about 40 bucks a night into the little plush toy/beanie baby ones! he wins about 10 things (just think- thats 1 toy for every 8 tries) for the night. and he doesnt even keep them! he gave them all to this old lady who he thought was 'smokin'.
i try not to get by those things too often, cause they always hook me. ill try, and come so close, i have to pop another dollar in there. and what do i get? some university of missouri bulldog plushdoll. ooh, 3 bucks that could have gone towards a new game or some food.
