Afissos is a pleasant village on the west coast of the Pelion peninsula. It is located about 6 kilometers away from Kala Nera, which is north of Afissos, and the distance from the capital city of Volos is about 26 kilometers. The village is reached by an exit from the main road. Then it is another 2.5 kilometers drive before you reach Afissos. The village is built in the shape of an amphitheatre above the beach, and around the houses there are olive trees. It overlooks the Pagasetic Gulf. Overall it's pretty quiet and a little less touristy than in Kala Nera. On the weekends, as the Greeks themselves are free, it gets more crowded. This is when the local population and the inhabitants of Volos come to enjoy the beaches and tavernas that Afissos has to offer. Also in August when the high season begins it can get crowded.

Afissos is an authentic Greek village with narrow streets and a cozy village square where you can eat or drink something in the shade of the plane trees. There is also a fountain where cold water flows out. Afitos stands on the site of the ancient Afetos, where according to the myth, Jason and the Argonauts made a stop to stock up on water before they went on looking for the Golden Fleece.

In the port of the village Afitos are the fishing boats that sail out each morning in order to catch the fish that than can be served in the harbor tavernas in the evenings. In Afissos you can find two beautiful beaches. The first one is called Kalifteri beach. This is a sandy beach where sunbeds and umbrellas are rented. The second beach is called Abovos beach and this is a beach with both sand and some small pebbles. Another pebble beach in the area of Afissos is called Lagoudi beach. The trees around Afissos grow up on the beaches and so there is always some shade to be found. The beaches run gradually into the sea and they are safe for families with small children.
