The village of Agia Marina is situated on the northcoast of Crete on a few kilometers (9) west of Chania. It is one of a number of villages in a row in this part of the island which seem to be all connected to eachother. The whole stretch consists mostly of modern and new luxury buildings. The amount of authentic old houses is limited here. Most of the hotels on the beach are of the larger and luxurious type with large beautiful swimming pools. The number of signs and advertisements on the main street that is running in between the interconnected villages is larger than in some of the shopping streets in Amsterdam.

The older part of the village, Pano Agia Marina - 500 meters upwards, has the more traditional buildings. This is the original part of the village. There is a nice and wide 2,5 kilometer long sandy beach though that comes with the village, with a view of an island (Agii Theodori) at a 400 meter distance from the shore. On this island are the remains of a Venetian fortress that was build in 1574 to protect another village (Platanias) against attacks from the Turks. The good beach and the beautiful views is what attracts the visitors. You will find that although there are quite some accommodations in this area the beach is definitely not overcrowded and there is plenty of space for everybody. Understandably there are lots of hotels and tavernas in Agia Marina that you can choose from.

If you are looking for a lively place, and still at the same time some peace and quiet, if you want a choice in plenty of restaurants, shops and small bars and you are also looking for a pretty sandy beach than this is a good place. Agia Marina is a good option for people that want to be on the beach yet near to historic towns like Chania and Kissamos, ancient towns like Polyrrinia and Aptera, the old monasteries on the Akrotiri peninsula, the Byzantine churches of Rotonda, Deliana and Meskla and other sights like the Castle of Izzedine and Lake Agia. You can either just relax and spend your days at the beach or at the pool or if you feel more adventurous you can go and explore the many attractions that are nearby.
