Another of the well known places is on Lesbos is Agiassos, near the middle of the island, with its narrow streets that are paved with cobbles. This attractive village has kept its old flavour and the fame of its pottery and wood carving has traveled well beyond Greece. It also has an Ecclesiastical and Folk Art Museum. Don't miss the Church of Panagia ti Vrefokratousa in the center of the village, with its collection of old icons, which includes an icon of the Mother and Child (Vrefocratoussa) attributed to St. Luke. The icon was brought to Agiassos from Jerusalem by a priest in the year 803. The church is the religuous center of the island of Lesbos. The surroundings of Agiassos is very pretty and very green with lots of different kinds of trees.
In Agiassos there are many shops that sell special pottery an ceramics, carved wooden objects, icons in silver frames, and soap. The church is on the inside one of the most beautiful churches on the island and there are several belltowers in the village. Plenty of tavernas, tall trees, beautiful nature, peace and quiet, nice rocks with houses glued to it, steep streets, this is Agiassos, a very attractive mountain village.
