AGISTRI OR ANGISTRI - THE SMALL GREEN ISLAND WITH MANY BEACHES |
Agistri (or: Angistri) is on of the Argo-Saronic islands situated in the Gulf of Aegina not far away from Athens. The island is 12 km2 in size and has a population of about 1000 people. It is situated west of its larger neighbour the island of Aegina. Agistri is a green island that is covered with pine trees and even though it is not very large there are a good number of beaches including one official naturist beach (Chalikiada in the southeast). Agistri is a popular day-excursion destination for Athenians that want to have clean beaches and clear waters. The island is connected to Piraeus by ferry and is served by these ferries a couple of times each day. The journey takes about 45 to 60 minutes. All the ferries arrive at the main port of Skala. You can check the schedules & book a ticket at the site of Greek Ferries. Agistri is mainly a beach island destination. In Skala you find hotels and taverna's and there is a beach. The east coast of the island is easily the most attractive part of the island. There is also a daily caïque (small wooden boat) from neighbouring Aegina to Agistri, that makes a stop at Skala and then runs along the north coast to Agistri's second port Megalochori/Mylos. There is also a bus that starts in Skala and calls on the villages of Megalochori/Mylos and the village of Limenaria. Limenaria is an untouristed and quiet village. A lot of the beaches are surrounded by lush vegetation and may be considered as a quite unspoiled location. The landscape is picturesque yet it doesn't get too crowded, not even in high season. This is the reason why visitors usually keep on coming year after year once they have discovered Agistri, as they feel they have a special place where to spent relaxing times on holiday, a place that is just for themselves. Note: there are no banks on the island (but there is an ATM machine for cash withdrawles in Skala), one taxi (and in the high season there is a horse and carriage) and one bus which runs the full length of the island and back but seemingly with no timetable. From Skala there is also a minitrain that goes to Milos harbour, around and through milos and back again to Skala. You can walk over the island from one side to the other in about 2 hours. In Skala you can find a number of minimarkets, but eating out is quite cheap. |
THE BEACHES AND NATURIST BEACHES OF THE ISLAND OF AGISTRI OR ANGISTRI |
Chalikiada Beach - This beach is the naturist Beach of the island of Agistri and it is situated in a rocky cove in the south east side of the island. You can reach the beach by a short swim from a nearby inlet of you can climb down a steep path. This beach is a little bit more difficult to access. There are no facilities here like sunbeds, umbrellas and tavernas so you must bring your own water and food. Skliri Beaches - These beaches are situated between Skala in the north and the beach of Chalikiada in the south east of the island. This part of the island has a very dramatic and beautiful coastline with some beaches. Skala Beaches - The beaches of Skala stretch all the way from the village of Skala along the north coast to Mylos. It is a collection of several beaches, some of them are pebble beaches and the main beaches have sand. They have gentle waves and are safe for children. On the other side of Skala there are more small pebble beaches. Some of the beaches have facilities and tavernas on them. Megalochori/Mylos Beaches - Also around the village of Mylos in the north east of the island there are several beaches, both pebble and sand. Some of the larger ones like the main beach come with facilities like sunbeds, tavernas and hotels. One of the best beaches in the area is called Xekofti Beach. Megalochori is a traditional quiet settlement with also some modern hotels, some bars and tavernas. It still remains a peaceful place with stone built houses that are painted white and a Culture Centre that displays archeological finds. Megalochori is situated at a 2,5 kilometer distance from the village of Skala and connected to it by bus. Mariza - Mariza is not really a beach, it is more like a platform from which you can jump into the water. It is situated in a small cove close to the village of Limenaria. Here the sea and the waves are more rough than on the north side of the island. Dragonera Beach - This pebble beach is situated in a large cove off the road between Mylos and Limenaria, about approximately 4 km from Skala. It is a popular but more quiet beach with a taverna and some facilities like sunbeds. On the beach they play relaxing music. The landscape here is beautiful as it is surrounded by mountains that are covered with pine trees. There is a view of a small uninhabited island from the beach. Dragonera Beach can be reached by bus (and a short walk), by taxi from Skala, or on foot. Aponissos Beach - Aponissos Beach is situated in the south west of the island of Agistri. This is a small sandy beach and there are no sunbeds for rent. The beach lies in beautiful surroundings and it is a favorite for owners of yachts. In the high season there is a small taverna opened for your food and water, but outside this period it is wise to bring your own. Sometimes it is possible to take a water taxi to this beach or another option is to take the bus to the capital Limenaria and then walk to the west coast. Just behind Aponissos Beach there is a small lake. |

Although I haven't visited yet this one, Rosy's Little Village (see pictures above), comes highly recommended by many people on the website of Tripadvisor. It has its own little beach downstairs and it is close to the official naturist beach. This would be my choice of accommodation since I plan to visit the island in the near future. Rosy's Little Village is a simple attractive retreat, located on the smallest island of the Saronic Islands, Agistri island in Greece. It's an ideal spot for enjoying great nature, solitude, relaxation, and greenery. Agistri is still unspoiled, it has lovely beaches and many secluded coves.
