The beach of Apella on the island of Karpathos in Greece |
The beach of Apella is located on the east coast of the island of Karpathos about 19 kilometers north of the capital Pigadia. You can drive there from Pigadia in about thirty minutes. The beach of Apella is located in a beautiful bay which is surrounded by a vast pine forest and the water of the sea is clear and beautiful emerald green in color. The beach is accessible by land, but during the tourist season there are also daily excursions by boat from Pigadia to Apella beach. Apella beach is an organized beach where you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas and there is a tavern where you can eat or drink something. Since the beach was declared the most beautiful beach in Europe by a German newspaper in 2003, it has become increasingly popular and the number of visitors has grown enormously. It can there for become quite busy at Apella beach, especially in high season. Apella beach is a sand and pebble beach with light colored sand and small white pebbles. Off the coast there are a few rocks in the sea that break the waves. A walk from the beach a few hundred meters up the road brings you to the "Apella cave church". It is the Byzantine Agios Loukas church that dates back to the second half of the thirteenth century. This church, built in a cave, contains remains of frescoes that have been well preserved. |
