The capital Chalkida or Chalkis on the island of Evia or Eubeoa in Greece |
The strategically located capital of Chalkida or Chalkis was an important place in ancient Greece. Documents show that the city has delivered ships for the Trojan war. Once the whole city was surrounded by a city wall, but everything had disappeared during the expansion of Chalkida. Now it's a mostly a modern event. Chalkida is the center of the island and from here there are also buses going around Evia. The name Chalkis originates from the copper mines that stood here and made the area prosp ("chalkis" is the Greek word for "copper"). The island is connected to the mainland by two bridges. In the center of Chalkida, where the distance to mainland is the smallest, you will find the old bridge. Here the sea looks more like a large river and the sea often flows wildly through the city. Every six hours the direction of water flow changes. The scientists can not explain what causes that. Just outside Chalkida lies the big suspension bridge. If you take this bridge you avoid a trip into the city if you do not feel like it. It was completed in 1993 and is almost 700 meters long. Around the old bridge of Chalkida you will find some quite large hotels. We stayed in the four star Lucylucy hotel where we had a beautiful view of the sea and the city. The rooms were spacious and tidy and the breakfast was also very extensive and good. On the seafront promenade you will find various eateries and cafés. This is a lively part but there are no cars on this side. On the other side of the bridge on the mainland there is a small castle. If you cross the bridge from Evia and then turn left, then there is a much bigger Venetian Karababa castle just a short distance away. In the middle of the castle is a nice old church.
