Chaniotis or Hanioti is a tourist resort on the southeast side of the Kassandra peninsula in Halkidiki. The village lies between Polychrono in the north (4 km away) and Pefkochori in the south (3 km away). The distance to the capital, Thessaloniki is approximately 100 kilometers. The village Chaniotis has about 1000 inhabitants and is a major tourist attraction for thousands of visitors during the summer months. According to tradition the village was named after its first occupant, who came from the city of Chania on Crete, and settled at about 2.5 kilometers south of the current Chaniotis.

In 1930 most of the buildings in Chaniotis were destroyed during an earthquake and after that the village was rebuilt. Most of the buildings you see are therefore quite new. Chaniotis offers modern accommodation and a central square, a market, a park with palm trees and a beautiful large white Othodoxe church with a bell tower. For tourists there is a wide choice of restaurants and shops and there is also some nightlife. The village is, just like most other villages on the Kassandra peninsula, surrounded by a dense forest. This makes it also a perfect destination for people that like to make hikes in nature or ride around on a bike to explore the peninsula.

In 2006 a large forest fire raged in the area near Chaniotis forcing thousands of tourists to evacuate. The people fled to the beach and the sea and some were rescued by boats. A German tourist was trampled during the panic and was killed. Also a part of the village was in flames. Many people spent the night on the beach. The width of the fire was about 9 kilometers and the nearby villages of Pefkochori and Polychrono were also not spared.

Chaniotis beach was awarded the Blue Flag and it is a beautiful long sandy beach with fine white sand and some shingle. The pines grow all the way to the beach and there are some tamarisk trees on the beach itself. On a part of the beach there are sunbeds and umbrellas for rent. It is a good place for snorkeling and you can also practise water sports here such as diving and jet skiing. There are also taverns near the beach where you can get something to drink or eat. Some beach bars give you free use of the sunbeds if you order something to drink. The people who walk a little further will come on a quieter stretch of beach.
