Fourni Town |
For most peoplle Fourni Town is the beginning and the end of their visit to the island of Fourni. It is an attractive and pleasant town with many nice restaurants and tavernas around the port and in the main street. There are two piers where the ferry stop: the smaller boat of Samos Ships stops in the middle next to the beaches and the much larger boat of GA ferries stops at the pier on the side of the town. In the middle of the harbour there iis also a water taxi that can take you in no time to Thimena, the island on the other side. There is also another boat, the Samos Sun, which regularly goes to Chissomilia village on the north side of Fourni and to the island of Thimena, but during our visit to the island Fourni this boat had problems problems with the engine. |
The town of Fourni is build more up the mountain than it extends along the coast. Inside the village there is a nice beach which is divided into two by a small pier. Along the quay and in the village are large tamarinde trees whose bark are painted white. Also along the beach tamarinde trees have been planted and there are benches. The trees on the beach itself still have to grow but give some shade. I didn't see any umbrellas and sunbeds. Also on the other side of the village there is a small beach. About the taverna's there was little to complain and we found a number of very good ones with original dishes. |
In the beginning of the main street you'll find the two ticket offices where you can buy tickets for the ferries. The fisrt one sells tickets for GA Ferries, but it is often closed. It belongs to the taverna next to it, so you can ask there. Next to this ticket office is the place where you can get tobacco and cigarettes and a few small things such as a bag of chips or a bottle of water. Further down the street there are a greengrocer, a cashpoint (but to be sure I would still bring some money), a pharmacy, a bakery, a paintstore, boutique / clothing shop, souvenir shop and three supermarkets. On a street nearby street there is another small supermarket, which is a bit messy but with very nice people and you never have to wait in line because I think nobody knows that it is there. Also in the main street and end at the square by the church you'll find several restaurants / cafes. There is also a hairdresser. If you make a walk through the town you will find everything. In the main street trees are planted and in many places there are gardens or pots of flowers, which brightens up the village. |
