Gergeri is a rather large village for Cretan standards. It has about 1500 inhabitants and is located at a 488 meters altitude at the foot of the Psiloritis mountains in the Heraklion district, just west of the larger village of Agia Varvari and east of the village of Zaros. The distance to the capital Heraklion is 35 kilometers. Gergeri is a lively village with shops, restaurants, a petrol station and four churches.
On the east side of the village there is a monument dedicated to a fighter pilot who died in 2010 after a plane crash. Two F16s collided against each other just west of the island of Chrissi in the south of Crete.
Sifis Anastasakis, a resident of the village, was in one of the jet fighters and he died three days after the accident. The two people in the other plane survived the accident.
