Kallithea is a village of about 500 inhabitants which is located in the northeast of the Kassandra peninsula, just south of Afitos. The distance to Thessaloniki is about 90 kilometers. The village was founded in 1922 by refugees from Asia Minor. Kallithea has a nice sandy beach with all facilities. A few large commercial hotels are positioned almost on the beach, and the rest of the village is a little further from the beach, separated by a strip of green with pine trees and a road. Here you can also find some more traditional accommodations. Kallithea is popular and because there are a few hotels with a large capacity it can get very busy.
Already in the 8th century BC it was the Dorians that built a shrine in honor of the god Dionysus in this place. In the 4th century BC a temple dedicated to Zeus was erected and later other buildings arose. The sanctuary was destroyed and there was a Christian basilica put in its place. During the Byzantine rule the whole area was destroyed and abandoned. In th 11th century a monastery was built in Kallithea, the Agios Panteleimon.
Today Kallithea attracts a lot of visitors because of its beautiful beaches, the ruins of the temples and the small church of Agios Panteleimon with its beautiful murals. But let's be honest: many of the visitors to Kallithea have no interest in this and they only come to lie on the beach during the day and to go out and party in the evening.
