On the way from the capital Skyros Chora towards the airport you will pass an area called Katounes. It is located in the north of the island, 6 kilometers from Skyros Chora, just before the exit to the excavation of the ancient Palamari. Along the way you will encounter several nice churches. At first you would think that in Katounes there are the ruins of various fortresses, because you see very large buildings that have fallen into disrepair and that consist of large piled stones. In fact, they are remnants of very large sheepfolds and houses of shepherds who stayed here in the lawns with their herds of goats and sheep in the days when the current road to Skyros Chora did not yet exist. In Katounes once lived a fairly large community of shepherds. The houses date from the 19th century and on a hill stands the pretty little church of Agios Georgios.
