The enormous Limonos Monastery a little north of Kallonis was founded in 1523 and was the intellectual center during the Turkish occupation of Lesbos. The monastery has expanded a lot over the years. The inside of the complex is traditionally forbidden for women. Inside the monastery there are several museums.
