Ormos is a quiet and friendly fishing village in the south of Samos next to Votsalakia and Kampos. It is prettier though and the houses have more character. It looks a bit older and more authentic than its close neighbour. Inside the village and on the edge of Ormos you can find the beaches of Ormos. On the boulevard of Ormos there are various possibilities to have something to eat or drink, and there are also a few hotels. The village has a supermarket and a bakery. A little higher up in Ormos you can visit the nice old church and have a look over the bay.

Ormos has more the feeling of a fishing village because of all the colored wooden kaiks that lie in the harbor. Here and there are fishermen in their boats or on the quay repairing their nets. It's much quieter than in the neighbouring popular village Votsalakia, where you find the three kilometer long sandy beach. The beach in the village Ormos itself is less attractive and consist mainly of pebbles and here and there there are pieces of sand. There are a few parasols and sun beds for rent. One of the tavernas in the village has a lot of bird cages hanging from its outdoor terrace with in each cage a different type of bird. There are also two monuments in the village that are this time not dedicated to victims of World War II but instead to fishermen that never returned from their trip. One is a very large anchor in the quay, the other is a stone memorial with portraits. A little bit further on the edge of the small village is pebble beach which is very long and not very wide. You won't find many people here.

The Kerkis Bay Family Tavern in front of the Kerkis Bay Hotel is situated at the beginning of the boulevard as you enter the village of Ormos. There are comfortable chairs and the toilets are spotless and clean. We order a chicken salad, grilled chicken and a couple of cappuccinos. We are "warned" by the waitress that the cappuccino will come with whipped cream on top instead of hot milk. It takes quite a while before the food arrives but during the time that we are waiting the waitress asks us if we are hungry, which makes us laugh out loud. No we are not hungry...that is why we ordered some food, ahah. The portions are large, cheap and very tasty though. You could tell that the cook had thought about what he was going to make. It was also presented very well.

Our verdict: an 8,5 out of 10 but it would have been a 9 out of 10 if they had brought it quicker.

Kerkis Bay Hotel is situated in the southwest of Samos island in the centre of the fishermens'village Ormos Marathokampos. It is built in a traditional style and there are 29 comfortable rooms with balcony, a bathroom, music, satelite tv, fridge, airconditioning and a hair dryer. There is an attractive reception lobby with seats and outside there are many pergolas. In the cosy village with its nice beach and good tavernas it is still pretty authentically Greek and not packed with tourists. The area is very pretty and the people in this part of Samos are very friendly and hospitable.
