The village and the beach of Petra on the island of Lesbos in Greece |
Petra is a beach village that is situated about 60 kilometres from Mytilini and just a couple of kilometres from Molyvos, in the north of Lesbos. The center of the village is closed to traffic, thus making it a quiet, peaceful and safe (for children) place. The front of the town on the sea shore appears to be mainly a touristic place, but the backstreets of the village give the visitor the feeling of the more remote traditional villages of the island. Here you will be captured with the feeling of being in the true Greece, with cozy shopping streets, small squared and narrow cobbled streets that lead along the old houses. The atmosphere in Petra is pleasant. |
A little bit more about the village of Petra on Lesbos |
Along the fine and rather large sandy beach there is a big variety in restaurants and cafenions to choose from. On parts of the beach there are parasols and beachbeds for, but a large part of the beach is without facilities. There are some trees for people that want to lie down in the shade when they are on the beach. The center of attention in the village of Petra is the church of the Glykfylousa Panagia (Our Lady of the Sweet Kiss) that was built in 1747 and that stands on top of a small mountain. The name of the village, Petra, actually means "stone" or "rock". You reach the top of the rock by climbing the 114 steps carved into the stone. In the chuch is another Greek miracle icon of the Holy Virgin Maria, that single handedly walkid its way to the top of the rock three nights in a row because it obviously wanted to stay there and did not like its original housing in a captains' hut. At the foot of the hill is the simple Agios Nikolaos Church with wall paintings dating from the 16th century. Opposite the beach of Petra there are three isolated islands. The biggest of them is called the island of St George. Caiques and fish boats that start from the port of Petra make regular trips to those islands. |
