The capital of the island of Karpathos, which is called Pigadia or Karpathos Town, lies in the flatter and more densely populated south of the island. Pigadia is the only large town on Karpathos island and about 2500 people live here. The distance to the airport is approximately 18 kilometers. The town lacks a truly historic heart. The best parts are the port and the couple of kilometers long beach north of the city. This beach is the busiest beach on the island, partly because there are many hotels on the strip.

In the port of Pigadia lie the wooden fishing boats and the excursion boats and here also the ferries come in from Piraeus on the mainland of Greece, and from Kassos and other islands like Chalki and Rhodes. Most of these ferries also make a stop at Diafani, another harbour on the island of Karpathos. Pigadia is the most important harbour of Karpathos, which also makes it a good base for tourists to explore the rest of the island. The boulevard of Pigadia is free of traffic. Around the port are the restaurants and shops. In the high season there are small boats from Pigadia to the beaches along the coast. The last beach on the route, Apella, is easily the best.
