The beautiful and large, stretched out bay of Plakias, that is surrounded by steep hilltops, is an attractive looking village in the south of Crete. The distance to the town of Rethymno, which is situated in the north of the island is about 35 kilometres. The road leading to it is good. The original village of Plakias with its harbour is on the west side of a very large beach that is sheltered by tamarisk trees. Around the harbour the beach is often pebbly, but if you walk further the beach becomes better and less crowded. Plakias beach has also places that are used as naturist beaches. The beach is one of the largest in the south of Crete and there are plenty of parking spaces.

Plakias has become quite popular in recent years (lots of Germans), and hotels and other buildings are rising everywhere in the village. Although it is a very pretty village I seemed to be missing some kind of atmosphere. The new part of the town with the boulevard was not my cup of tea. I was missing original buildings here and houses that are falling apart, I was even missing goats :). This is understandable if you realise that in 1970 there were only ten buildings in the village. There are nice terraces and restaurants though which overlook the sea, where you can relax and have something to drink or eat.

The older part of Plakias has more appeal. Maybe it was just a bit too posh for me because most of the hotels in Plakias are of a luxury standard. In Plakias you find all kinds of facilities. There are quite a few shops, a couple of supermarkets and plenty of taverns to choose from. There is no bank in Plakias (yet) so make sure to bring some money when you visit this place. There is no busy night life scene in the village of Plakias. There are two cafetarias that you can visit in the evening to have a drink but there are no large discos or things like that. People that visit Plakias for the holiday mainly go here for the peace and quiet and the beautiful large beach.

Compared to other coastal villages it is still pretty quiet and there is plenty of space though in Plakias and the beach: no complaints about that. The beach of Plakias is large, sandy and it is good and the waters are clear. Plakias is also famous for its wonderful sunsets. It's a place where people want to spend their holidays in style. Being situated in the south of the island and away from mass tourism it is no wonder that the village and the beach is a favourite amongst plenty of people that have seen more than just one village in Crete.

Plakias Suites, newly opened in 2011, offers self-contained accommodation 20 metres from the sandy Paligremnos Beach.
