In the southwest of the Kassandra peninsula in Halkidiki you can find the village of Possidi, which is located right next to a beautiful sandy beach. The distance to the capital Thessaloniki is about 95 kilometers and the distance to the main town of the region, Poligiros, is 70 kilometers. Not far from Possidi are the resorts of Skala Fourkas (in the north) and Mola Kaliva (in the east). Possidi Beach is within sight of the old castle of Mende. Mende was probably founded in the 8th or 9th century BC by inhabitants of Eretria, a town on the island of Evia. The city owed its name to a special kind of mint that is still growing in the area. Mende was famous for the export of local wine and the city was rich in silver, gold and lead. This made it one of the most important towns in the area.

The ruins of the city Mende are situated on a plateau and on the hills just south of Kalandra and cover an area of approximately 600 by 1200 meters. It can be found close to the Mendi Hotel. There are remains of a fortress, an acropolis, warehouses and a sanctuary that was built in honour of the god Poseidon. The sanctuary is the oldest part and it was in use from the 12th to the 2nd century BC. The bulk of Mende was only excavated between 1984 and 1994. Towards the beach a road wad uncovered with foundations of buildings that stood alongside it. South of the town a cemetery with 241 tombs was found. It is believed that Mende was also the birthplace of the famous sculptor Paiogios, who lived in the fifth century BC. One of his famous sculptures is the Niki which was found in Olympia.

Kalandra beach is a large and sandy beach with fine golden sand. Situated right on the beach is the 4 **** Hotel Mendi. There are hardly any other accommodations here. The beach is surrounded by olive groves and pine forest. On Kalandra beach there are some parasols and sunbeds for rent. The water is shallow and the seabed is sandy, and so it's perfect for families with small children. There is also a possibility to practise water sports on Kalandra beach.
