This is the refuge of Pythagoras when he was on the run from Polycrates. The cave is situated some 300m up from the parking area for the site by steps. A second cave has recently been opened up close to the main cave and this is said by some to be the real cave of Pythagoras. Pythagoras spend a lot of his life in exile in Italy.
The walk to the cave from Kampos is a long one and the trip can also be done with a good car. Some pieces of the road are paved, some parts and not the road is not wide on all places. The last part is good again. The cave is high so it takes some climbing. At one time we came across a sign which said that the cave was still 1 kilometer far, and when I saw a church somewhere I thought we were there. At that church however there was another sign saying it was still one kilometer far away and some time later there was a third sign saying that it was still a kilometer walk. To reach the cave you have to go up all the stairs. Fortunately, there is a tavern at the bottom of the stairs. Since I am scared of heights I didn't dare to walk the last two or three metres, so my travel friend Wilbert took the photos of the cave.
