The village and the beach of Skala Eressos on the island of Lesbos in Greece |
The village of Skala Eressos in the west of Lesbos is situated in a dramatic and defenitely the most beautiful bay of the island, and blessed with a gorgeous beach (on one part nudism is allowed). Skala Eressos attracts all kinds of people but mainly those that are looking for some peace and quiet and people that want to have some space when they are on the beach. In this village you can totally and completely relax, because it is on the other side of the island and far away from all the noise that you find in the tourist centres. |
The streets of the town of Skala Eressos which border the beach are closed to all cars, making it quiet and safe to walk. More importantly you do not have to worry about the safety of your children. The town ends at the beach road but cafes and restaurants have built bamboo covered decks that extend out on to the sand so you can sit in the shade and watch your kids playing in the Aegean and not be more than a few feet away (at this part with the restaurants the beach is much more narrow than it is further in the bay). The small colourful boats in the harbor brighten up the place and supply the village with fresh fish like sardines, shrimps and swordfish each day. On the boulevard and in the streets behind it there is a good choice for restaurants and there are a few mini-markets and small shops. |
Skala Eressos in antiquity |
In antiquity Skala Eressos was an important commercial center and there are remains of an ancient city and walls. There are also mosaics from a 5th century basilica behind the new church. Eressos (a village just landinwards from Skala Eressos) is also the birth place of the famous lesbian poet Sappho. This is why it also attracts the lesbian community who come for a visit or spend the holiday here. |
Skala Eressos is close to the petrified forrest and the lovely coastal village of Sigri. The surroundings and the nature in the area are breathtakingly beautiful. It is less green and more wild and rugged, and actually this western part of the island of Lesbos forms kind of a contrast to the east where it is so green. The forests make more space for shrubs and flowers and it is drier, but surely not less attractive. |

Villa La Skala (former Villa La Passione) - Skala Eressos |
One of my favorite villages is Skala Eressos in the west, situated in a dramatic and the most beautiful bay of the island, and with a gorgeous beach (on one part nudism is allowed). In this village you can totally and completely relax, because it is far away from all the noise that you find in thet tourist centers. The streets of the town of Skala Eressos which border the beach are closed to all cars, making it quiet and safe to walk. More importantly you do not have to worry about the safety of your children. The town ends at the beach road but cafes and restaurants have built bamboo covered decks that extend out on to the sand so you can sit in the shade and watch your kids playing in the Aegean and not be more than a few feet away. we stayed with the always good spiritted and helpful Nikolaos, who rents out a house on a very quiet location in the village, close to the beach. In this house there are three large apartments, each with a minimum of two bedrooms, and they all have a a very cozy veranda. All you really need to bring is your toothbrush, because the apartments come with all the luxury and style imaginable: not just airconditioning and satelite tv, but also a toaster, a coffee machine and a completely utelized kitchen. Nikolaos doesn't care if you come alone, as a couple or with a whole group, and the prices are so good, there is no need to go anywhere else, because starting at 65 euro (in 2007) you already have a complete house that can accommodate 5 people. Go there!!
