In the southeast of Crete the main road runs mainly along the coast and the sea, sometimes passing a village. Inland are a lot of greenhouses (wooden structures covered with see through plastic - to grow vegetables). The southeast is the main vegetable store of Crete and for other parts of Greece. From Ierapetra heading west all the way to Makrigialos and beyond the road is quite straight following the shoreline until the village of Goudouras (with plenty of more greenhouses). On the side of the road you find the small villages, the beaches and a few small tourist centers. At Goudouras in the east the road turns inland and the roads start winding and climbing up the hills and the mountains, passing a small village every now and then. The main village here is Ziros which is build in a fertile valley at the foot of a mountain. Here are the crossroads going to the different directions. In the area are a few Roman and Hellenistic excavations, like in Xerokampos and Makrigialos. In Kato Zakros you can find one of the four Minoan Palaces that have been discovered.

In the southeast of Crete there are some of the greatest and more quiet beaches of Crete. The whole stretch between Ierapatra and the complete southeast of the island (Xerokampos, Kato Zakros) is one beach after the next. Some beaches are more popular because of the tourist concentration (like Makrigialos and Analipsi) but most of them are very quiet. There are also quite a number of good naturist beaches, like the long beach at Kalo Nero, the beach at Ferma, parts of Xerokampos beach and several other smaller private beaches. The main town of Ierapetra has got a long and sandy beach of its own that stretches for kilometers and after that there are several named and unnamed beaches at and in between for instance Agia Fotia, Ferma, Kalo Nero, Mavros Kolimbos, Goudouras, Asprolithos, Makrigialos and Analipsi. The list goes on and on and there is a beach for everybody. The southeast is probably the most unspoiled part of Crete, so the best option for people that are looking to spend a quiet holiday away from the tourist centers.
