The village of Spatharei lies just below the village of Pirgos and is accessible via an exit to the south leading from that village. The route leads you past beautiful views of the Bay of Marathokampou and a little bit further of the island of Samiopoula. From Spatharei itself there are views over several islands, including the Fourni islands, Ikaria and Agathonissi. In this area a huge fire raged in the year 1996 and along the way you regularly see the remains of burnt trees. The green of shrubs and small trees have taken over the spots here and nature is slowly restored. Spatharei has narrow streets and there is a big church, the Taxiarchis Church, which dates from 1580. Just past Spatharei is the exit to the monastery Moni Evangelistria (not paved). The name of the village comes from a village on the island of Evia: here it is called Spathari. Around Spatharei are many fields with olive trees and the village is one of the leading producers of olive oil on the island of Samos.
