This beautiful large villa with private pool of 50 m2 is situated on a hill next to the village of Megala Chorafia (near Chania - which is 13 kilometers away - and Kalives, in the north of the island of Crete). It is one of the nicest places we ever stayed. The villa is easy to reach. If you come from the direction of Chania and drive towards the east you will pass the village Megala Chorafia. Just after the exit to the village you can clearly see the sign that says "Villa Amalia next exit 100 m" and here you drive over a narrow but good road into the hills. You can not miss it and you will automatically end up at the villa. Here is a separate parking area where you can put the car.

Villa Amalia has three floors and is located in green surroundings. Behind the house is a path to the east into nature or you can go up the mountain where you end up at a farm. You can also walk from the villa to the village of Megala Chorafia (when you turn to the left on the road after you have driven up the hill you can see on the other side of the road a path to the village). Up above the house on mountain you can see a piece of an old wall with large stones, probably a part of the old city wall of the ancient city of Aptera.

The views from Villa Amalia are without a doubt truly magnificent. You look out over the Bay of Souda and two small islands and the naval base that are in front of the villa. On one of these islands is an old fortress. You will have naval vessels sailing in and out and see the fishing boats and tour boats go up and down to Chania. Also cargo ships and ferries sail by. A few times we saw a submarine in the bay. In the evening when the ferries depart from Souda with their lights on it is a festive sight. In the background you can also see the planes land and take off at the airport of Chania (the noise is neglectable, too far away). To the west you can see the mountains and the village Megala Chorafia that lies within the woods. In one way or another the evening skies here are often very beautiful and they have a special color: yellow or orange or pink, it is like looking at a painting. There are a couple of comfortable outdoor spaces where you can watch it all. On each floor there is a large terrace with table and chairs, and the garden (with BBQ) and also the pool look out over the beautiful bay.

Villa Amalia is very big - I estimate about 200 m2 or maybe more. On the ground floor - open plan - there is a large living room with comfortable sofas and a fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen with breakfast bar, a dining room with table and chairs, a bedroom with a double bed, a bathroom with shower and toilet, and a utility room where you can find the washing machine and dryer, ironing equipment, cleaning products etcetera. The ground floor opens onto a terrace with tables and chairs, a space for children to play, a barbecue and garden (from here there are stairs to the pool which is situated one floor higher).

On the first floor you find the two entrances (two doors). There is also parking for cars. Like the ground floor, this floor is open plan with a beautiful large kitchen with a cooking island and all devices that you could ever want (dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, hot water boiler, toaster and much more). There are also a lot of pots, pans and all crockery, cutlery and glasses. In the kitchen there is a dining table and chairs. There is also a lounge area with sofas and a TV, a separate chair in a corner and a large dining table and chairs. On this floor there is a toilet with a beautiful red sink.

From the terrace with the table and chairs you can walk to the large private pool with sun beds and umbrellas which is located on this level. The pool has a small isolated piece for children (this is the only part of the pool that remains in the shade most of the day due to a palm tree in the garden). The pool is fantastic. The nice thing about the terrace of the villa is that you can always find a spot in the shade and that it is almost always protected from the wind, so it's a wonderful place to also sit in the evenings and have dinner or a drink there while you overlook all the lights on the Akrotiri peninsula in the bay of Souda.

On the top floor of the villa there are two spacious bedrooms with magnificent sea views. They share a large common terrace with comfortable chairs and a table. Here is perhaps the best view of the villa. The master bedroom has a double bed and a very high ceiling, the other bedroom has two single beds. Both bedrooms have huge amounts of storage space. The master bedroom has an ensuite bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink. On this floor there is another bathroom with a whirlpool bath, toilet and a washing machine. Like this actually each bedroom in the house has a private bathroom.

When we arrived there was a fruit basket, a bottle of wine, a CD about Chania / Crete, info on Aptera and a description of how the devices worked in the villa plus a book on the villa. The guestbook contains tips for things to go and see and restaurants that are recommended by previous occupants.
The water in the house is drinkable and much better than the bottled water you'd normally have to buy (saves lugging around again).
Each bedroom has a bathroom.
Actually it is ideally located close to Kalives and Chania, with your own pool in front of the door. for example if you feel like shopping you go to Chania and if you fancy a beach you go to one of the beautiful beaches of Kalives or Almirida. If you don't feel like doing that you stay at home because everything you need for a relaxing holiday is at your villa.
