The village of Zaros and Lake Zaros on the island of Crete |
The village of Zaros has rich historical past as the Roman aqueduct, the traditional alleys with ancient architectural and the churches' adorns. The village is famous for the beautiful lake as well as for the local vivarium where you can enjoy the taste of fresh trout. You can reach the lake via an exit just before Zaros as you come from the village of Vorizia in the west or just after the village of Zaros if you come from the village of Agia Varvara in the east. The last part is over a dirt track. You can walk to the lake or go by car. At the end where the lake is there is a large parking. Lake Zaros with its deep green blue colour makes more the impression of a lake in the Swiss Alps and it is surrounded by lush vegetation and tall trees. It is a gathering point for the Greek families for a day out and a dinner in one of the taverns that are located by the lake. I also saw an excursion bus driving into the parking lot. A recommendation is supposedly a visit to cafe-tavern "Vegera" at the center of the village of Zaros, where you can taste traditional Cretan cuisine with home made wine and raki. |
In a short distance of the village of Zaros you find the famous gorge of Rouvas (next to the entrance of the dirt track to the lake, walking trail which is 4,5 km long), as well as the historical monasteries of Valsamonero, Vrontisi, Agios Nikolaos. From Lake Zaros there is a walking path going to this last monastery. Other places worth visiting are the plateau of Nidas, the old settlements of Kourites, Fari, Drosou, Paliamas and Laloymas' dam - ideal places for the fans hiking. Furthermore from Zaros within 15 minutes driving you can visit the town of Moires for shopping at the local shops and the open-air market (pazari) every Saturday. Close to Moires are the powerful, at ancient times, towns of Faistos and Gortyna. At last within 25 minutes driving you can reach the magnificent beaches of (famous) Matala, Komos, Agia Triada, Kokkinos Pyrgos e.t.c. For all hotels, studios and apartments in Zaros - click here. |
