Once upon a time there was a king who ruled a small mountainous kingdom. When the king became adult, he set out in search of wife by himself. One day he reached to a house of an old woman and took shelter there. The old woman fed him whatever she had in her house. After dinner, they started chating. The king told the old woman the purpose of his tour. After hearing the purpose of the king the old woman gave him a bird's egg and said, " O Youngman, Take this egg to a stream and crack it. You will get what you are looking for."
In the morning, the king thanked to the old woman and started with the egg she had given to him the previous night. He took the egg to a stream and cracked it. A beautiful girl came out of the egg and greeted the king. The king became very happy finding the beautiful girl. He took the girl to his kingdom.
When, they got close to the palace, the king asked the girl to wait on a tree. He went to his palace to tell the news to his people and make arragement for to-be-the-queen's welcome. He wanted to take his beautiful bride to the palace in huge procession and with royal honor.
On the other hand, the queen climbed on a tree by a spring well and waited for the king. At that time an ugly and ........ (with one eye damaged) woman came to the spring with her pot to get water. The woman was wicked by her heart too. When the ugly woman looked into the well she saw a beautiful face in water. She thought the image in the water was her's and became surprised. She spoke loudly saying how beautiful she was. The queen was watching the ugly woman from above the tree. She couldn't stop laughing when the ugly woman praised herself.
The ugly woman requested the queen to come down. She talked to the queen very nice. She asked questions to the queen as where she had come from and what she was doing there. The queen told the woman her story from the beginning and the king's plan to take her to royal palace. Listening the story from the queen, the ugly woman instantly made a wicked plan. She put the queen on her lap, talked sweet and caressed her hair. The queen fell asleep after a while because she was tired. As soon as the queen fell asleep, the wicked woman killed her and threw her body in the stream She took the queen's dress off, dressed it herself, climbed up the tree and waited for the king.
After some time the king came with a procession of musical band. He asked the woman on the tree to come down. He became surprised seeing an ugly woman there. He asked the woman, "What happened to your skin? Your were a beautiful woman but now you look dark and ugly". The wicked woman replied, "My skin was tanned by the sun so it became dark". The king again asked, "Both of your eyes were good, but your one eye is pocked now. What happened to it?" The woman answered that a crow flew by and pocked her one eye. The king didn't know what to do. Therefore he asked again, "Your voice was sweet before but it has turned raspy now. What happened to it?" She said, "While you were away, I was hungry and ate the leaves of the tree. That turned my voice raspy."
The king had no idea what had happened to his beautiful queen. He had no choice other than taking the ugly woman to his palace. He ordered his people to put the woman in a carriage and proceed. After getting order from the king, the cheerful procession started toward the palace with the musical band.
By that time, the murdered beautiful woman had taken the life of a bird called Rani Chari (queen bird). The Queen Bird flew close to the king and said, " The real queen is dead in the stream and the ugly woman is in the queen's carriage". The king ordered the procession to stop and said, "Listen to the beautiful bird. What is she saying?"
The ugly woman who knew what the bird was telling screamed, "The bird is telling you to take me quickly to the palace. Move on fast.." The Queen Bird repeated her message again and again flying close to the king and procession, but no one heard her because of the noise of the musical band.
The king got married with the ugly woman not knowing what had happened to the beautiful woman. On the other hand, the dead queen wanted to take revenge with the ugly woman. Therefore she appeared as a nettle bush near the main entrance of the palace. The nettle bush gave trouble by hitting the ugly queen every time she passed through the door. Therefore she ordered her servants to remove the nettle bush from the door. The nettle bush then appeared in the form of bammboo bush near the door. The bamboo hit the ugly queen as she passed by the door. Therefore the queen asked her servants to cut the bamboo and take away from the palace. The servants cleared the bamboo bush and threw away.
A poor man took the bamboo to his house thinking that he could make use of it to cook his food. When he put the bamboo in the fire, the beautiful woman appeared again. The poor man became very happy and took care of her well.
The news of the appearance of a beautiful woman spread all over. The king also heard it. One night, the king disguised as a farmer and sneaked to the poor man's hut. He listened the conversation of the woman and the poor man from outside. The woman was telling the poor man about her story. It didn't take long for the king to understand that she was the beautiful woman appeared from the egg. He became very happy finding the beautiful woman again. He took the woman to his palace and married with her.
The king punished the ugly woman to death. Besides, he gave a lot of wealth to the poor man who recovered his beautiful wife. Thus they spent rest of their life happily.
