FAIRY TALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

A Father's Love(A retelling of the Prodigal Son

A long time ago, during the age of kings, there was a family. The father had two sons, a big house, and a lot of land. They were living in peace until the day the younger son wanted to take the shares that belonged to him. The father advised him to stay with him a while longer and his inheritance would belong to him, but the younger son didn't listen to him.

The father's heart was heavy, but he divided his possessions into two parts, and he gave a part to the younger son. Within a few days, the younger son sold everything to get cash, and he went to places where he wanted to go. He traveled to a large city. He spent his money very quickly and soon he became a popular spender. He spent the money with extravagance.

Eventually, his money ran out. About the same time, there was a drought in that country, and everyone in that town worked very hard to get food, especially people who had no work and who had nothing. Then, he really needed help. He knew that he was alone. He wondered where the people were who were always around him when he had money to spend. Alone and dejected, he found a job taking care of pigs in the field. He only got a little money from this work, so he didn't have enough money to buy food and other things. Sometimes he had to eat the pigs' food.

Finally, he realized that he had gotten into this situation because of his own foolishness, and he thought in his father's house the servants had plenty of food to eat, but he didn't. He decided to get back to his father's house and hoped his father would forgive him and take him in as one of the servants. While he was still a distance away from home, his father saw him coming. When his son came closer, the father ran to meet him, held him in his loving arms, and kissed him.

The father took him into the house and told the servants to bring the best robe to put on him, and he told them to put a ring on his hand and shoes on his feet. Then father said, "Let's eat and be happy because my son was dead and has come to life. We thought he would never return, but now he is with us again."
