...Hyokkori Hyoutan Island! hyokkori hyo--tan JIMA daa!
= "unexpected gourd," which doesn't
make much sense unless you realize that one Japanese term for "something
unexpected" is "something that comes out of a gourd". The following is taken
from the PoroX2 script for "Omoide Poroporo"...
"Hyokkori Hyoutan Island" was a televised puppet show very similar to a cross
between "Beany and Cecil," "Mr. Rodgers' Neighborhood," and the "Muppet Show"
set on a floating island. It ran an impressive 1224 episodes over a span of
5 years (1964-1969). It attracted viewers with its modern-day storyline and
songs, as well as with its fresh, wide cast of characters. The main character
was Don Gabacho, the self-proclaimed President (only recognized by himself as
such) of the island. (Ardent KOR TV fans might remember the "Don Gabacho"
flubbed line from the "Gone With the Wind" TV episode.)
I'm sure Matsumoto Izumi is old enough to have remembered this show, but as
for Kurumi (born in 1971)...>
