A new villain is in New York, and there's only one man who has been bitten by a radioactive spider who can stop him. Basically your average, run-of-the-mill superhero story, but why mess with success?
The creation of Doctor Octopus left a bad taste in my mouth, though. I mean, he puts on these arms for no apparent reason, and apparently they're evil and can control him somehow? Of course he thinks whatever safety features he has built in would work, but we all know they malfunction, and he goes evil when his four extra limbs tell him what to do and how to do it. It just seemed too odd even for a movie about a guy who gets turned into a spider. I don't know. Also, I'd like to point out that they took some ballsy chances with some of the stuff that they "revealed." Maybe a bit too early in the movie series?
Really, there was little action in the movie. I think all superhero movies have turned into were things that younger kids could get into and see how cool their favorite hero is by going around fighting a supervillain. Most of the movie is about Spider-Man, and not about the fighting and the saving and the stuff (well, not in the way I wanted). However, the fights that were there were pretty cool. While they weren't anything spectacular, I still enjoyed them. The little adventurey stuff with Peter Parker was amusing for a while, but eventually I found myself bored with it all and wanted more Doctor Octopus showing up and attacking people.
Did I mention that I saw this before I saw the first one? Oh well
I can't really say anything for the characters in the previous movies continuity wise, but what went along with MJ and Spiderman was, in a word, fine. The newspaper head was very wacky, pretty much what I expected him to be and more. Maybe not. I don't know, I never read a Spiderman comic in my life. Doctor Octopus was very cool, though, I wanted to see more of him, but I'll take what I can get.
Whoever that guy who played Doctor Octopus was a good choice, I enjoyed every minute of him. However, I think I'm going to grow tired of Tobey McGuire as the Scarlet Spider. Or Spiderman. He just seemed a little boring to me after a while. One thing I have to mention, though, is the little horror parts that were brought into it all. Very Evil Dead reminisent, and I'm sure Sam Raimi fans will get that.
Overall: 7.5/10
Bah, typical superhero movie, maybe watered down
