WELCOME TO THE EGOWLBASE
I came from the land of the kings, where every man can do what he wishes… In short and simple language, from the rugged terrains of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental of the Republic of the Philippines.
I was born on the 14th day, when God grew tired after two cycles of creation, under the sign of the mysterious and luscious virgin of the nth cycle of the year of the horse. The stars, then, were in proper coordination, in their own respective constellations, the right planets were in their proper orbits and I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. My birth was a tragedy, for I cried aloud, thinking why I was borne into this great stage of fools (that is according to Shakespeare).
Borne of mixed Filipino and Chinese descent, of Ilonggo-speaking parents, and raised in a Cebuano-speaking community, learned to master Tagalog and English, as well as Taekwondo while in a Yoga trance, I was a living exemplar of the local dish called chopsuey.
But I grew strong (eating tortang talong), conquering every obstacle (i.e. unconquerable mountains served at the dining table).I excelled in what I do (if you call it a failure, It wasn’t my fault), nevertheless, I was a natural standout (I could never fit in any group).
Eventually,I grew tired of eating tortang talong, my parents, grew tired of me and sent me to a long and arduous journey to the country’s premiere university, the University of the Philippines. With one mission in mind, that is, to grab a sheet of paper called a diploma(FYI), inscribed with the words, “Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine”. Knowing the University of the Philippines, where everyone comes from the many regions of this Eastern Island fair, the natural tendency of men of the same culture and interests to come together and drink together, I stumbled upon the brotherhood of the Primos of the Lumabay-Labay Club ’57. Labay, as it is fondly called, is a confraternity of Ilonggo students of the University of the Philippines, founded over bottles of beer and a common sense of culture, the Ilonggo culture. Of Primos bonded as brothers, who respectfully gave me the moniker, EGOWL. But life in the University was too much for me, as I was formerly educated in a Minor Seminary. College life for me was unbearable. The feeling of being seated in a classroom populated with men, women, and both, was unmistakably UNGODLY for a poor soul such as mine.
Nevertheless, I grew tired of slicing the brains of a poor dog and naming it’s parts, I realized that I don’t want to spend the rest of my life looking for the medulla oblongata in the brains of an irrational being.
My mind was then filled with questions, the reasons for my existence, what is God’s plan for me, what can I make of myself, what am I doing here, and where in hell are my tsinelas?
After discerning answers to my unintelligible questions, dreaming of impossible dreams, fighting unbeatable adversaries, reaching the unreachable stars, and bearing unbearable sorrows (O wag ka na ring kumanta!), I ventured to seek insurmountable challenges.
And so, after many years, of wandering and troubling of my existence, I finally found my home, after hurdling the plains of Luzon and hiking the mountains of Baguio, my precious destination, The Philippine Military Academy. Where I learned and embraced my calling to serve in the noble profession of arms.
But if you’ll raise the question, will I stay here forever? Tuyo!, My adventures are still to come, (I might write a book about it.) HUA! For a progressive military career!
And now, about my name… that would be another very long story… but for now, just call me ELY.

“Men
who adopt the profession of arms, submit, to their own free will, to a law of
perpetual constraint of their own accord. They resist their right to live where
they choose, dress as they like, and say what they think. It takes but an order
to remove them from their families and dislocate their normal lives.
In
a world of command, they must rise, march, run, endure bad weather, go without
sleep or food, be isolated in some distant post, work until they drop. They
have ceased to become the masters of their own fate. If they drop in their
tracks, if their ashes are scattered to the four winds, it is all part and
parcel of their job.”
