KHANDA: THE SIKH EMBLEM
The Khanda. This symbol is called the "Khanda" and is the universal symbol of the Sikh religion. The circle in the symbol is called the "Chakar" and it symbolizes the never-ending universe that we currently live in, the infinity of God. The two swords that surround the circle are called "Meeri" and "Peeri." These swords represent Spiritual Virtue and Temporal Virtue. As a Sikh, one should be sound in mind and strong in body. Sikhs can't be hermits -- they are required to be active in their respective societies, helping those in need. The Double-Edged sword in the center is called a "Khanda" (yes, it has the same name as the symbol) and it symbolizes the divine power of the One, Infinite, Omnipresent, Formless, Fearless, Angerless Omnipotent God. The khanda is also used to stir water as part of the Sikh 'baptism' ceremony. Why weapons, you ask? Sikhs are obliged to always defend the weak and the oppressed, regardless of caste, creed, or religion.
