Best Albums of 2004

My Soundtrack this year. Some of it bought, some of it stolen. My basis for this list is what I listened to the most.

I. The Streets"A Grand Don't Come For Free" - Easily the best album of the year. Mike Skinner's brilliant storytelling with attention to detail shows the glory in his everyman tales. A year in the life of a geezer, taking us through the throes of a budding romance which then fails, and also the missing case of a thousand pounds. In the end, he comes upon realizations both great and small with lessons we should all learn. As he said on his first album, 'In 500 years they'll play this song in museums'.

The Rest in No Particular Order:

- Kanye West "The College Dropout" - After reading so many liner notes with the 'Produced by K. West', he finally got around to putting out his own album. Although some of the themes are questionable, his heart is always in the right place. The final track where he tells the story of his life is one that most lame rappers should learn from. Bigups Chi-town.

- The Arcade Fire "Funeral" - Hipster band #1 of the moment. As much as I'd love to say this album sucks...it really doesn't.

- Therion "Lemuria/Sirius B" - After a few REALLY crappy albums Christofer Johnsson finally got his shit together and recorded this epic double album to return to form. I can't see how anyone could find fault with this.

- Dungen "Ta Det Lugnt" - Great hippie/stoner rock from Sweden.

- The Walkmen "Bows + Arrows" - 'The Rat' is the best song of the year. I can't say that I really listened to the rest of the album. Neither did you.

- Kardinal Offishall "Kill BloodclotBill Vol 1"- Kardy didn't wait around for the record execs to approve it, and put out this wicked mix-tape on his own. Granted the whole theme gets tired/lame quickly, the rhymes and beats are Kardy on top of his game.

- Feist "Let it Die" - This sometime Broken Social Scener, and Tdot via Paris kid has a voice that will make you melt. Light on the indie-rock, heavy on the mellow.

- K-OS "Joyful Rebellion" - He lied when he said that he'd never make another album. What are you gonna do? This not-quite-anything collection of songs is all over the map. But it works. There's also an homage to MJ! Bigups YorkU and Trinidad & Tobago. The sad thing is that I actually bought this CD, and stupid Northwest Airlines lost the liner notes.

- Gentleman Reg "Darby & Joan" - More upbeat catchy songs than his last album.

- Dizzee Rascal "Showtime" - I still don't like his first album. However, this time LDN MC shows a lot of maturity with this straight-up hiphop.

- Isis "Panopticon" - Not your average metal band by any means.

- The Scotland Yard Gospel Choir "I bet you say that to all the boys" - Cool Chicago upstarts remind me a lot of Mojave 3. They write a good song though.
